HD4550 or 7600GT to run old games?

I can buy either card (second hand) for roughly the same amount of money. The question is which card will run the following games better:

- UT2004
- Far Cry (the first game)
- Prey
- Vegas2

I don't intend to play newer games in the next year or so, which is why I'm not looking to buy a more modern card at the moment.

This is for a new machine that's based on Intel i5-750 CPU.

Thanks!

Hmm, THG suggests the 4550 will be faster, but that isn't saying much...

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/chart...q3-2009-mainstream-quality/benchmarks,73.html

Both cards appear in that, and from the few I looked at the 4550 is on top by a reasonable margin...same with some older ones (you can access older charts to the right of that screen as you look at it).

Older combined scores chart confirming that:

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/chart...2008/Sum-of-FPS-Benchmarks-1280x1024,796.html

Keep in mind they both awful, but for 1024 or 1280 resolution gaming in those games you should be fine (I was with a 6800GS@ faster than Ultra at those resolutions, and even with a 9800 pro and 6600GT at 1024 in those games). I am always amazed how far we have come since those days...

EDIT: Thought I would double check but the 4550 even seems to stay ahead overall with AA at 1280 as well:

It seems the 4550 should be better for my (modest) needs.

Thanks for helping!

If you don't mind me asking, is your budget constrained? Any reason why you are not getting the 4670 at the very least?

You know, for when you do eventually want to play some somewhat newer titles?

I'm actually willing to pay quite a bit more, but only if (1) the card is passive cooled, (2) is available locally, that is in Israel -and- (3) the card provides good value for money.

The PowerColor HD5750 Go-Green could have been perfect, but it's not available locally. I'm also considering the HIS HD5750 iCooler which is available and uses a fan which should be silent, but past experience tells me that these fans eventually become noisy. I really appreciate the silence and I'm willing to pay for it (e.g. by waiting for the right passively-cooled card to be out and available locally, and in the meanwhile compromising on a card that only runs older games).

Availability. It's not sold locally any more and I don't want to risk ordering from abroad.

Passive cooled versions of the HD4670 and HD5750 are not available at the moment is Israel. The cards that are available (passively cooled) are 9600GT, 9800GT and HD4650 (DDR2), and HD4550 (DDR3). The first three are too expensive for what they are - outdated cards. The 4550 is really cheap, and even cheaper second hand (as is the 7600GT). My thinking is that I could buy a really cheap card now, use it for older games (which I still enjoy playing very much) and then upgrade to something better when availability and pricing become more reasonable. I'll then use the old card to expand my desktop with another monitor (which is something I always wanted to do).

You know, for when you do eventually want to play some somewhat newer titles?
The thing is that I'm in no rush to play those newer titles, and when it does become a need there will probably be far better cards out.

I'd say go for the HD 4550. It would make a good HTPC card when you replace it in the future.

What advantages does the HD4550 offer over a passively cooled 7600GT (for HTPC)? Specifically I'm referring to the Gigabyte version of the card:

http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=3&id=1908
http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2017
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/gigabyte-7600gt.html

Power efficiency and HD acceleration has greatly improved in the time between those cards. 7600GT was ~2006 era, 4550 was early '09 IIRC, so about three years between them.

why not get the i3 with the integrated graphics and the h55 mobo? I'm pretty sure it will do well with old games. When you're ready for an upgrade in graphics you can go to the 5850 as the i3 won't be bottlenecking it when you over clock itto 4.0ghz +

edit: nvm you already have the i5. Yea i agree go for the 4550.

I decided that the two components I don't want to compromise on are the ones I'm not likely to replace in the next several years - the CPU and the mother board. I went for the i5 750 and the GA-P55A-UD3R. Both are supposed to last long enough. The video card should last a year until I upgrade to something more powerful.

Good idea, the integrated i3 would not play the games you mentioned very well at all anyway.

Why not get a better card and get an aftermarket passive cooler?

It'll be too expensive. However, one of the options I'm considering is to get the HIS HD5750 iCooler, and if the fan eventually becomes too noisy to switch to a passive cooler.

Oh, okay. I thought you mentioned that you were willing to pay extra for the silence.

On the plus side, a lot of aftermarket coolers can be used on future video cards as well.

I am willing to pay extra, but to a certain limit. The HIS HD5750 already costs 4 times more than the cards in the title. Adding a passive VGA cooler will bring the price up to 5 times the price of these cards. I may add such a cooler eventually if I buy this card and the fan becomes noisy, but not right away.

5750 or 5770 (if it's roughly the same price there. it is in the U.S) would be a big step up in speed. Otherwise definitely 4550 would be better for htpc since it can do audio via hdmi as well. I'm pretty sure 7xxx series didn't have audio pass through since the first I saw of that was in late model 8800s and 9xxx series.

I have a GT220 laying around that I won't be using. Not sure how much it'll cost to ship to you though. The GT220 clearly beats the other cards (mine is 1GB): http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/chart...od%5B3521]=on&prod[3543]=on&prod[3537]=on

Let me know if you are interested. If shipping isn't too much then that should be ideal. Otherwise, you might as well buy from where you are.

Update: The card is not passively cooled, but pretty quiet I'd say. Single slot and a small fan. *shrug*

Thanks for the very generous offer, marsbound2024. I'll PM you if it becomes relevant.

I finally bought a passively cooled 7900GS. I tested it Furmark and GeoForms demo (altogether for about 10 minuets, at 1920x1200) and everything was stable. I'm going to run relatively older games and at lower resolution, so I don't expect any problems. And for 25 bucks, there's really very little risk here.

I appreciate the offer, but I already bought the 7900GS and I'm very happy with it.
