Has anyone out there done a review of three ATI HD3850? What is the performance like?

I doubt it because it's a ridiculous idea. You can have to 3870s for cheaper and it will likely perform better.

Where can I get 3870's for less than 3850's?

Here ya go:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...70&bop=And&Order=PRICE

And here is the 3850's sorted by price, your only saving $10 going with a 3850 512MB. If you bought a 3850 512MB over a 3870 you would save at most $10 and lose a significant amount of performance for the price difference. Just go with 3870's.

Hmm...I just paid $142 for my second 3850. I had a tough time finding a 3870 for under $180. PLUS, when both cards are crossfired, the performance increase of the 3870 over the 3850 is ~ 4 fps. Just wondered what performance three 3850's would give.

I assume that you have a 790x platform. here's a quote from that article that you linked:

The caveat here is that CrossFire X will settle on the lowest core GPU clock, memory clock, and video RAM size to determine the operative clock speeds and effective memory size. As a result, a Radeon HD 3870 X2 paired with a Radeon HD 3850 256MB would perform like a trio of Radeon HD 3850 256MB cards

I think that's your answer, though it would be interesting to see if that was truly the case.

That is pretty much what I found too both with regard to price and performance. I just paid $179.99 AR for this one.. the only other one that I found at that price was the gigabyte, but that has ddr3 so I not really sure of the point. I am banking that the 3870's OC potential is greater with the higher quality RAM..

In response to your original post; I have not found a 3850 tri-crossover article, but I did see a 3870x2 in crossfire with a single 3870
