I had my HD go down on me and I am trying to find a way to repair it. I was doing a reformat / reinstall of win 2k and during the format win 2k read a fatal error on the drive and won't finish the install. In addition, now my pc will not recoginize the drive at all. This is preventing me from even using it as a second HD.

Are there any HD utilities that might find and repair (or isolate) the bad section of the disk so it can be used?

Go to the website of the drive maker and download their disk utility.

They run from a bootable floppy.

If your PC does not recognize the drive

and the cables are connected okay
and the drive was not formatted with 3rd party software

then most probably
the drive is dead...

This problem happened several months ago and I am just now getting back to it. Due to the time between then and now I cannot remember what I did exactly, however, I might have formatted the drive with partition magic before trying to reinstall windows.

Would this make a difference?
