Trying to get my new beast running right. 1.33 on an Iwill KA266-R and a 45gb Maxtor. Says the HD's using MS-DOS paging compatibility or something like that. A friend said he dealt with it, but it was a pain in the buttika. I looked on Google and didn't see much that helped. Didn't want to spend days poring through technical gobbledygook in order to find a good answer.

BTW- I'm running 98se.

It also doesn't shutdown. Hits the Windoze Shutdown splashscreen, and that's it. A linux guy thought the BIOS might have a goofy setting, but I couldn't find anything in there that would mess w/ it. And I just did a reformat the other day trying to fix it. No luck.

Both Windows95 and 98 have a bug: Sometimes, Windows can't work out the IDE controller, and therefore ceases to use its 32-bit drivers for it.

Symptoms:
- CDROM drive disappears
- In device manager, both "Primary IDE controller" and "Secondary IDE controller" appear with a yellow exclamation mark
- In device manager under "performance", all HD's appear in compatibility mode.

Solution:
Click Start, then Run... , and type regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\IOS
You should see a value named "NoIDE". Delete it, close regedit and reboot!

<< It also doesn't shutdown >>

did you install the windows shutdown patch??

Thanks, I'll try that tonight after work!

And no, haven't tried the Shutdown patch yet.
LOL. I tell all my friends w/ the problem to do that.... but I've never had that problem. Then when I do, I ignore my own advice.

LOL- isn't good advice unless it comes from someone else :D

Tried the registry thing.
No go.
Under IOS, I have these values:

Default value not set
Start 00
StaticVxD "*IOS"

That's it. Nothing saying "NoIDE"

Any ideas?

I had compatibility mode on too for my HD's its a real performance eater .. my HD got 5040 drivemarks in sandra (99 i think, long tima ago ..) after reformatting etc (with something different than Fdisk cous fdisk was the cause of this) my Drive was out of compatibility mode and I got 9354 Drivemarks, so the performance almost doubled (acces time reduced from 12ms to 7 ms (even faster than my primary despite the fact that they are the same (maybe sumething with free space left ..)

Iwill KA266-R is Ali chipset..... (although I could try the Via 4-in-1 drivers ;) )

just installed the stuf that was on the disc provided w/ the mb. And the website doesn't provide too much in the way of additional fun DLs.

Almost positive it's not a virus. It had that problem immediately after installing the OS (Win98se)- Before I ever got online w/ it. But it never hurts to check :)

I might give the Ali IDE drivers another go. Think I've done that already a couple times, but hey- maybe it'll get tired of me screwin' w/ it.

Makin' my own beastie and getting it to run correctly seems like much more work that it's worth. I don't really have the patience to troubleshoot pesky things. I get mad because when I want it to work, I want it to work NOW. Murphy loves me, though, so I never get anything to work right NOW. Later or Much Later is usually the case :(

first thing i would do is go into safe mode, dev manager, highlight and remove all cd's, cdr's showing
reboot to redetect

if that doesnt work, i would shut down and unplug any cd/cdr on same cable as hdd., reboot to see if the cd is the cause

if that didnt work i would:
Boot from a clean write protected boot diskette
Once at A:\> type fdisk /mbr and press enter, this should return you
to the A:\>
Type sys c: and press enter, once the system has been transferred
remove the diskette and reboot the computer.

if that didnt work i would:
1.On the Windows 98 CD open the Tools\mtsutil folder
2.In this folder locate the noide.inf file.
3.Right click the file and choose install.

I had this same problem 2 times

1. once it was a cause by a boot record virus using a infected floppy disk
what Bozo Galora said work for me
"Once at A:\> type fdisk /mbr and press enter, this should return you"

2. after reformatting my HD for some reason this one time windows did not install the HD Divers. (I format a few times before with no problems)
I download the drivers from samsung.com and that solve my problem.

Bah, what virus scan!

You need to install the IDE driver that comes with the mobo. It is RAID, right? On my Epox 8K7A+, I use the raid as a plain IDE controller. Had this problem until I installed the IDE driver (but not the RAID driver).
