HD Swap Problem

My brand new Maxtor 80gb SATA Drive took a dump (Making beeping noise) in my new SB75G2, so I took an old Maxtor IDE 60 GB and tried to put it in my Shuttle system. I have no Floppy Drive, only lite-on dvd-rw ldw-401. Anywho, tried to load XP home on it and it said "unmountable boot volume." I took the HD out and am reformatting it on my other computer. Will this clear the HD for XP install? Just wondering before I have to run to get new HD. Also, can I load XP in this HD and swap it to the Shuttle (is this possible?)

Any suggestions?
