HD sound in linux compared to WinXP

I just got a new Toshiba hard drive for my laptop, partitioned it for linux and WinXP and installed both. This hard drive is supposed to be hydraulic bearing and I definitely notice that it's quiet in WinXP but not at all quiet in linux.. is this normal? My XP partition is NTFS and linux is ex3.

I don't think it should matter much but my first guess is that Linux uses resources a bit more wisely and therefore its a bit more efficient. Maybe it gets things done faster and thus requires more hard drive usage in the same amount of time.
