HD read speeds take a hit since installing linux

I installed linux (can't remember which release) on a spare 160 gig maxtor hard drive but didn't get on with it so reused the hard drive for storring stuff on. The strange thing is since this the read speed max's out at about 38 meg, it used to easily be over 90. The write speed is over TWICE what the read speed is. SMART shows everything fine. Anyway here's a screeny of ATTO with my Hitatchi drive to the LEFT and the maxtor drive to the RIGHT.

Can anybody shed any light on this for me, THANKS

Those are great speeds you are getting. Id be glad hehe. HDs get slower when they get full, because the platter diameter is smaller when it recording in the inner area of them, so the heads dont move so fast on the platter even though the spindle speed is constant. I get about 38MB/s as well on my 200GB maxtor which is packed full. Roughly 60MB/s on the data which is stored first.

There's about 20 gig on the 160 gig maxtor and about 132gig free. the strange thing is this drive used to be really fast until I put linux on it and then BAM it became slow.
