If it sounds as good as FM playing analog (which does sound better than a CD) then I really care about it. I'm just waiting for a good tuner to come out and stations that don't muck with the music/source.

I've never heard an FM station that came close to CD quality on my HT setup.

Viva Sirius. And Tenax, satellite radio is not a scam. It offers the only real choice I have in my completely clearchannel monopolized market.

You can take my Sirius channel 26 (Left of Center) from me when you pry it from my cold, dead grasp. I have no idea how I lived without it for so long.

[edit] Also - I own a iPod Video, an older iRiver 512mb mp3 player, I have about 300 CDs, about half of which are on a 2nd HD on my PC, and a Sirius S50 radio that records and saves up to 50 hours of content.

99.9% of my listening time is spent with my S50. Having access to that much content is crack. being able to build a playlist that's currently approaching 300 songs, all of which are absolute 5 star favorites of mine, and being able to shuffle replay that when the current broadcast isn't doing it for me, and bounce back when I am done, is the best music delivery experience I've ever had. They're updated it with a new model, but it bridges the gap between iPods and broadcast, and it's awesome.

Sirius was bought by XM so they're both Clearchannel now.

Yeah, no. Sirius bought XM, so Sirius owns Clear Channel (at least their XM stations). So yeah, not the same.

HD TV/movies are the big thing so the radio stations wanted to cash in on that catch phrase "HiDefinition." "Hey, what about HD sound?" WTF is that exactly? SACD or DVD-A sound quality? Hell no. What you get is a little better sound quality with all the commercials and censorship you've grown to love with regular radio. Give me a freakin' break. On top of that, you have to PAY for an HD receiver to even get HD Radio. Seriously? And I still get an ass load of commercials? What a joke. The REAL action is on the XM and Sirius side. Content is king, and satellite radio has more than you could ever ask for with ZERO or few commercials, and best of all, UNCENSORED.

Actually the HD in HD Radio stands for Hybrid Digital, whatever that means. As for your comment about having to PAY for an HD receiver, uh.. duh? Its not the same technology as a standard analog receiver. Maybe I'm mistaken, but don't you also have to PAY for a sattelite radio receiver also? If there are free ones available, point me to them! Free broadcast radio (analog and digital) = ads to pay for them. Sattelite radio = you pay for it. Seems to me that someone's gotta pay!

and secondarily, the study found that not only are most other medias not a threat to radio, but one of the main problems with satellite radio, is they don't tell you what the new songs are..for example, the new seether tune is a huge breakout hit for them. sure, you can hear it on satellite radio, but if radio ..or a friend, isn't there to tell you who's playing it..what it's called...how are you ever going to buy it..unless you luck out or take the time to do a lyric search. easier to listen to a radio station for most..given that the number 2 listener complaint constantly is "they don't tell me the name of the songs enough"...any programmer who has any brains is encouraging their on air talent to name ever band, and every song..whether it's a classic hit..or a new song..and as a programmer who teaches that to his staff..i can tell you, it works..and that's a part of what makes my radio stations valuable to our listeners.. and why satellite radio tuning has fallen in our city from 15%, to 11% in the last year, in spite of the impact of "new sources of media"

Am I missing something here ? Why can they not just look down at their receiver to get this information ?

Every Sat Radio I have seen has the Artist Name and Song Info available real time on the receiver.

Edit.. And no I dont care about HD radio... Content is king, enough with the commercials already.

SAT Radio is where its at for me.

Yes, but you don't get some DJ telling you "here's the brand new song by <artist here>"

So you really don't know if it's new or old if you're never heard it.

Don't most Sirius stations show

Artist
Title (New Music!)?

That was my experience when I had Sirius for 2 years. I really need to replace my dead receiver. I miss Sirius. :(

Radio used to be good, now it's just the same old syndicate crap. The life was sucked out of radio so I don't care anymore. Even fucking classical station is doing the "top xx" kind of programming.

I'm waiting for the AM channels to go HD in my area. It would be nice to hear AM in FM quality.

I remember the old AM stereo that they tried for a while and it didn't work...hopefully HD radio won't go the same direction.

No. The only station I listen to is NPR and they don't have commercial, just a few underwriting spots. When I want to listen to music, I pop in a CD of old music. I've given up on new music, they're all crap.

Why all the hate for HD Radio? I don't understand. It's simply a transition. Hell, it's like the Digital TV switch happening in two months, except as of now, no one is forcing an equipment upgrade.

I haven't yet, and probably won't upgrade to a radio that is HD capable. I don't care much about radio. But it does sound better. And the benefit is in new cars, or people who are buying a new deck for their car, and HD Radio is one of the features. I won't pay for it, but I most certainly won't deny the chance to have it if I'm upgrading anyhow. So if I ever get a new deck, then yeah I'll get one with HD Radio, but I rarely listen to radio, and only listen to CDs and my MP3 player when on the road. But HD Radio does sound much better than stock radio, and if you by default get the ability to receive the stations because you just got a new car, then how can you complain? Better sound, if of course you have a discerning ear. I don't even have an audiophile's ears yet I can tell the difference, and welcome it. :)

I have an HD Radio. It sounds better than FM, but lame car speakers make that something of a mixed blessing. Channel selection is, of course, not quite as good as regular FM. It's fantastic, however, to have a way to get the traffic at a moment's notice. For the monthly price of free, I'll take it over satellite. If I want to listen to something specific (which is most of the time), I'll just plug my Zune in.

There are clearly some hard-core satellite fanboys on here, so I'm not sure I'm going to argue this one out.

I had Sirius for a while, god I hated that shit. It had LOADS of commercials, particularly for Sirius itself. HEY MUTHAFUCKAS, I ALREADY BOUGHT SIRIUS! I DON'T NEED YOU TO ADVERTISE YOURSELVES EVERY 10 FUCKING MINUTES!!

Argh.

As per HD Radio, fuck it. I can't be bothered to buy some other shit for my car, I just make MP3 CDs and stick with that. I've also heard that the 'HD' part isn't really true. It's apparently more like a 64 or 96kbit mp3 in terms of quality.

yeah, a couple guys at work had sat radio in thier trucks. i was like "wtf? what's with all the spam? you pay them monthly for this?"

i like the idea of it because there's only a small premium for the tuner, and that's it. my area has lots of hd stations. sound quality is supposed to comparable to cd's. obviously, it's not going to sound like SACD / DVDA (another format war with no survivors)
