i dont know what that stuff means. can some1 help me out by telling me which i should buy please. i use my comp for mostly games and encoding movies, so i need a pretty durable HD
 
ams30gts, performance between the J and L drives should be identical. The main difference is in the design of the drive. The L series uses a Fluid Dynamic Bearing motor that is supposed to run quieter and cooler. Seagate was the first w/ these FDB motors. From what little I've expereinced and read, the Seagate Barracuda IV drive is quieter than the Maxtor FDB drive. I've installed four of the Seagates recently, and to a drive they are stone silent. The Maxtor L drive, on the other hand, will exhibit seeking sounds, though quieter than the J drives. There have also been reports of the Maxtors developing a high pitched squeal.
 
thanx. i suppose i should just buy the 80 gig 7200 rpm seagate from frys for 109 then. i missed the rebate...but oh well...rebates take like 6 months to ge anyways....109 is still decent i think
