i just bought a 27" hdtv monitor for my bedroom...it has 1 dvi, 2 component, 2 svideo, and 2 rca connections...my computer is running into svideo1, dvd changer into component1...i can already tell the difference in the way the computer looks(it's a lot sharper and i can run in 800X600 and still be able to read text just fine, whereas before i was stuck at 640X480 or it was too blurry to read small text)

however, the dvd player looks much the same as it did...what am i missing here? i thought dvds were 480 lines and i would get a better picture...is this where a progressive scan dvd player comes into play? how can i tell if mine is progressive?

just trying to figure out why my dvds don't look better than they did on the old 27" flat screen

thx :)

EDIT: the dvd player is a Kenwood DV-4050...i can't seem to find anything saying whether or not its progressive scan and the kenwood site is under construction right now...there isn't much there...anyone help me out?

I've never actually used a DVD player connected to a physical HDTV (I do all my HDTV/DVD watching on my computer :p), but as long as it supports progressive scan (look in the player's manual, or search for the specs online or something), it should look better from what I understand...(obviously only if you're using Component connections, which you are)

Edit: Also look in the TV's manual to make sure both Component inputs support HD resolutions (or at least ED/480p)

i'll check the manual for the monitor and look up the specs of the dvd changer right quick :)

thx for the reply

the htpc is a p3 700 with a gf4mx for the video card...it's something i threw together to be able to watch downloaded video without having to burn stuff to disc...only it's too slow for hd video :(

but the vid card only has rca output, svideo, and 15 pin vga :(

i thought about dragging my main rig in here to hook it up to the dvi just to see how it looks...but i'm too lazy to do all that ;)

what brand tv? if you are going from a Sony 27 wega to a piece of crap advent 27" hdtv then the picture will probably be worse because the tv is junk. just because it is HD doesn't mean everything when it comes to picture quality of DVDs

the tv i had was a sanyo 27" flat screen

the new one is a 27" RCA...it supports up to 1080i...and it looks a whole lot better with the computer input than the old one did...so i'm alright with it...i just think my dvd player isn't progressive scan :(

if it's not a progressive scan DVD player, then you probably won't see any improvement in DVD playback.

One other thing, if you plan on using it hooked up to your PC a lot, you DEFINATLY should use DVI.

I run a cheapo-generico 27inch HDTV LCD on my PC (as well as a 19inch CRT for general usage), and it displays 1280x768 perfectly. Just as clear as on my CRT.
