I've tried VLC and MPC, MPC fares a little better, but still no go.

I tried ripping the bluray stuff into smaller 8gig dvd9 sized x264, but still no go. the Audio sometimes goes async with the vid.

I love my BDs to death, but I've always ripped DVDs to my HTPC so I don't have to fumble with them. But I guess my comp is just limited.

Is there ways to rip to PS3?

I think you're mistaken when you say that the PS3 has "far less raw power". I believe the 3.2ghz 7-way power PC core is much more powerful than your 2.9ghz opteron 144.

For Blu-ray playback, you really want to get a video card with dedicated AVC decoding. The GeForce 8 & 9 series, or Radeon HD series. With a hardware decoder chip, it's surprising how little raw power you then need in a cpu / gpu combination.

The PS3 has a very powerful processor inside it too, don't forget it's an 8-core cpu, and it doesn't have the overhead of an OS and many other running tasks.

Is it possible to encode for my ps3 then?

and are You SURE, a 8800gt would do the trick, because at it's current price point I have more than enough to pull the trigger on it.

I know for sure the 8800gt has dedicated hardware for decoding AVC, while the x1900xtx does not. Beyond that, my knowledge is what I read from others on forums or review sites. I've read that Blu-ray movies can be run on an 8400gs and a A64 3000+. If you look at what kind of hardware is inside the standalone Blu-ray players like the Sony BDP-S300 or the Samsung BD-P1400, it's very minimal, nothing even vaguely close to a modern pc cpu / gpu combination.

Will 8800gt also work with the files I rip to HardD, because the only Disk changer they currently have is $2800.
