HD Problems, Please HELP!!!!

Hi all,

I am really needing some help, and can't seem to get it anywhere. I have a new comp ( about 2 months old) that has 2 60 GB HDs in it, one 7200, one 5400, both Maxtor. I use the 5400 for storage, movies, MP3s, etc. The 7200 runs my games, programs, OS, etc. The problem happened about 3 days ago. Windows does not show I have two, only one, the 7200. I have tried everything I know. I had them stacked one on the other, so I put space between them (hopefully not too late). I tried the 5400 on another IDE cable which I know worked. I tried another HD in the 5400 spot. I have changed both jumpers from cable select to master and slave.

If anyone has any other suggestions, or can tell me how to check to see if the 5400 is still good, please let me know. I am not so much interested in saving what is on the drive, but don't want to trash the drive itself, as it is less than 6 months old.

Thank you for your time,

Gump

Are they on seperate IDE cables? or the same? Does the 5400 HD get hot when you turn on the computer?

BIOS does recongize the drive, but something strange is that is calls it an ATA 100. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that a 7200 speed? Shouldn't it be an ATA 66, or not? It does power up, I can feel it running, but with no strange noises, and it is normal temperature. They are on the same IDE cable. I did have them both set as cable select, but now have the 72 as M, and the 54 as S.

Thanks for the help, past and future.

The ATA 33/66/100/133 has nothing to do with the spindle speed. If you look at some new maxtors coming out, they are ata 133 with a spindle speed of 5400.

btw.. it sound like the partition setup got deleted from the drive. If you really do not want to recover anything from the drive, then try repartitioning and formatting the drive.
