HD performance v.s. improving airflow

I was thinking about removing one IDE cable to improve air flow. Currently I've got my HD set up as master on channel and I've got my DVD player set up as master on the other channel.

If I put the DVD player as slave on the same channel with the HD, I can eliminate one cable in the case. But by doing this, do you degrade HD performance any by having the DVD on the same channel?

And if I do this, does the position on the cable make differnce? It would be much easier to have the HD as the middle device on the cable and the DVD at the end but of course I'd want the HD to be the master device on that channel.

My cables are already self-rounded but I just figured one less cable in the case would be better.

How much difference is one cable going to make? Not much in my experience unless you have the cable wrapped around your cpu or something 😉

I agree, one cable will not a make a big difference. I actually rounded all my cables and the temp didn't change at all.

Thanks guys, I'll leave things the way they are. Heat is actually very manageable in my case, idle temps normally at 38-39C, full load at 42-43C.

I just had the urge to buy those silver rounded cables but when I figured it was going to cost me $100 for a ATA100, floppy, IDE, and SCSI cable, I was trying find a way to cut corners and bring down the cost LOL.

well i've not rounded my cable, i use a fong kai 320 case and my cpu themp is at 35 idle and full load around 38 to 39 i use five fans, the thing sounds like a wind tunnel but eventually you get accustom to it. I think you should try more fan of get a bigger case.

Hehe, I really doubt that removing one cable will improve the airflow. Why don't you just buy a more powerful cooling fan, or simply add another one? You can also tie the cable to the drive cage to get it out of the way...

to answer the question... You would see degradation in HDD performance only because the limitations of the IDE bus. So, theoretically, only when you used both your DVD drive and your HDD at the same time would you see any impact since both devices would be fighting for bandwith (and w/ IDE, only one device can access the channel at any given time). Anyway hope it helps.
