I was playing a game and the game froze, i figure, no biggie, random lockup, cant CTRL ALT DEL, so I reset it, and when the computer is running scan disk, its going slow, then it tries to go into windows and I heard the HD making a scratching like sound. I have never heard it do this before, it was not an ordinary sound. It sounded like something was scrathing or it couldnt read the data or something. Luckily, it didnt happen again and things are going ok, i ran scan disk and all checks out ok, and its back to normal, but does anyone have a clue what this coulda been? Its an IBM DTLA 45 meg HD, ata 100. Thanks for your info, I am curious to see what this could have been!

If its a 75GXP, it could be that you have bad sectors on your drive, backup all infor immediately.Search for '75GXP' , previous posts will explain.

Hmm, I will do that, but, its not a 75gxp I dont think, cause its only a 45 gig HD. Thanks though, I will still want to look at that.

Yup, mines a 75GXP, and, it was running hot. I did a case mod to get more air to around the HD so it should run cooler now. Thanks for the info, I just hope it runs good and ok!! I had it about 6 months now and this is the first hicup its given me!

If the drive is w/in warranty, I would head over to WD's site and look at the steps to RMA'ng the drive.

I would try and do a search on the forums as to what's the best. There's no real definite answer imo b/c different people will have different +/- experiences with different hdd brands.

I've personally had a certain degree of good luck of Western Digital, though a 4.3 GB WD is getting me worried; never rma'd a WD before. I've dealt with Seagate but had to rma hdds from them 2 times. I've had no problems with the 15 GB IBM drives I've had but they weren't the much-feared 60GXPs or 70GXPs. I've had no problems with the Maxtors that I've used either. I do avoid Samsung drives like the plague (though). I've had to rma 4 of their drives (always the optimist) thinking it was only just 1 bad drive.
