Win 2003. 2 year old maxell HD. For the past several days, every 10-30 seconds the HD will lock up for a few seconds. I've defagged. I did a check disk and had some errors that were fixed, but this has become very incessant now. Mouse will lock up and video on screen, too. Adaware scan found nothing fwiw. Ideas..? :)

Like the system will freeze up and then be ok for a bit after? Ive replaced 7 Maxtors in our 800 PC company here within the past 2 months. No other brands though.

I will try that utility out.

Basically what happens is quite frequently and predictably--like some timed process is trying something--the system will almost completely lockup. The mouse will become very flashy and only every second or so do an update draw on where it is, but the computer will otehrwise be pretty locked up for about 10 seconds. If music is playing it will loop the same bit over and over. Also, copying data from that HD to an external or even to itself I cannot do it and get tons of errors. Checkdisk seems ok and I did defrag (it was severely defragged before doing that). I unplugged the DVD player to see if it was messing up something, per comments elsewhere on the web, but it wasn't.

It is a maxtor, yes :) I will run that util and check for results.

Every Maxtor drive I ever owned failed.

I could never get a boot disk done with that downloaded app to boot into it and test the HD. In any case, it got worse and I really had a suspicion some process was doing it so I formatted and reinstalled the OS, and now I'm golden. I have no idea what had done it, but now I'm running without issue :) Thanks for the help!

The word Maxtor to me means fail.

I've had a ton of Maxtors, still have some as small as a 3.2GB and they all still work. I see failure rates as being pretty even from my experience. I've replaced the same number of drives from all different brands over the years, no specific ones stuck out except the Deathstars. :)

Hey, I still have an old 75gxp deathstar running on my daughter's computer. That thing must be 8 years old now. :)
