not sure if anyone has any ideas here. my old 4100 dell pooped out and while i am attempting to figure out what do with that and the fact that i want to run an ftp server for shows of bands who allow taping.....I am trying to see if I can consolidate some of my drives and maybe put them in my new 8400 while i figure out whether to build or buy a new comp as a server.
so here is the deal
dell 8400
SATA 160gb
win xp sp 2
1 IDE controller on the mobo which usually has my burner and my dvdrom drive but now is not connected to these.
not sure what other info you would need.
my old computer was running these drives without a problem on win xp sp 2 - 250 gb maxtor, 120 gd maxtor, 160gb wd, 80gb wd (boot drive).
so i opened up my 8400 and disconnected the cd rom drives.
with the 120 and 160gb i was able to put them on the first (master) spot on the IDE cable separately -> able to access them with xp without any problems. this 250gb is the one that is not working.
it is hooked up to the same power source and cable the others were on in the master spot. i used cable select -> not detected. it is now in master -> not detected. by not detected what i mean is that:
windows sees it in device manager
the bios sees it in the primary IDE slot
but my computer does not see it and it is not accessible.
i believe this drive is one large partition and ntfs.
not sure what is going. i went into disk management and it mentioned that it is a dynamic drive. would this matter? i used the maxtor software and it says it will set it up after i format it. not going to happen! 250 gigs of shows are not going to go down the tube. so....anyone have any ideas?
