OK i have a 120 gig WD HD. it currently has 86 gigs of stuff on it. i checked this by highlighting everything on it and going to properties. Now the strange thing is that Deskkeeper and windows are telling me that i only have 11 gigs free. the disk formatted to 111gigs so that would mean im using 100 gigs. but im not im only using 86 gigs. Where the fusk are my missing 10 gigs??? anyone know or have any idea. im running a defrag now see if that fixes anything. if I can find a space for the 86 gigs of stuff on it ill reformat it but I don?t want to do that cause finding space is gonna be hard

EDIT: i noticed it was dooing odd things when i transfered 3 gigs off the drive and it only showed that I transfered 200 megs off

this is on a drive that windows in NOT installed on

i tried disk cleanup but it sat at the "deleating compressed olf files" for liek 20 min so i quit that

thats happened to me before...it gets to that part and all HD activity stops... weird.

i ran defrag in safe mode command prompt and it seemed to work...

im running Xp ro useing NTFS. there arnt any hidden files i checked. or norton protected files

i know there are diff in what you use to check size on disk but not a diff of 14 gigs
this is on a drive that windows in NOT installed on

ok this is odd i just deleted 3 gigs from another drive and it only says i deleter 30 megs. WTF is going on

i just ran a norton sys scan i have 2003 with the latest defs and i dont send stuff to the recycle bin its deleted immidatly instead of going there

Having Hibernate enabled can take up a lot of space. Mine takes up 1GB of HD space. Virtual memory can take up a lot as well, whatever you have it set at will show up as unavailable. I think the recycle bin automatically reserves 10% of the HD space for its use as well.

your not listning. its not in the recycle bin or tried up in memory. i8m talking about actual HD space. today i deleted 5 gigs of data odd HD 1. but it only registered it as 50 megs. leaving almost 5 gigs in limbo land. its now happening on all 3 drives

Are you using Norton SystemWorks? If so is Norton Recycle Bin Enabled? If it is, although files are deleted from your view they are not fully deleted and they still take up disk space for another week by default. Go to Recycle Bin->properties->Norton Protection. From there Purge protected files if you desire or whatever else.

thers a prob with dooin that. i removed my recycle bin from my desktop in Win Xp and i cant figure out how to get it back. and cant find it anywhere

Open up a folder, type recycle bin in the address bar and press enter. If the recycle bin comes up right click and go to properties. It works on my comp, but not sure if it is reffering to the desktop icon.

SWEET

thanks to all that helped. it was fusking norton and its protected recycle bin. i had to go diging for it in nortons opetons. i just recently reinstalled norton 2003 and forgot about that. i must have had it dissabled on my other version.

again thanks
