HD is constantly spiking, Vista Business

Here's a picture that shows some blue line work on the disk monitor in performance monitor. What does this indicate? and do any of you know how I can find out what's causing it?

I can hear the disks spin up and the computer gets sluggish for a second, especially in games. It used to do this a little when I first installed Vista, but it's been pretty good until very recently. I suspect something in the new performance and reliability updates is causing this. I downloaded the final versions from MS 2 days ago, and that's when it seemed to get bad. Any insight you guys can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Does this happen seemingly at random?

Or after booting? If so it's probably just superfetch, and it takes longer since the cache has just been getting bigger...specially since you have 4GB of RAM.

Can you try and pinpoint which process is doing most of the I/O access?

Right now it's not doing it so much, but it'll do it well after I've rebooted my machine. It's almost rhythmic. Maybe every 30-60 seconds I'll hear the drive spin up, and that blue line gets left on the performance graph. I'm having a little trouble interpreting the data the monitor is giving me. I need to study it a bit longer to try to figure it out. I can probably get it to log the events with times, but I need to tear into it a bit more.

Edit:
I think I may have found the problem. After reading around the web, I found that Defender can cause those symptoms. After disabling Defender the hd hasn't spiked. Hopefully this fixed the problem 🙂

Edit2:
That didn't work, it's still spiking 🙁

I get this issuse too, its painful surfing the web and its chugging away for 3 seconds freezing the entire system (cant click links, scroll windows, ect)

Stangly enough, does not do it in any of the games I play. I use opera btw.

I uninstalled update 938194, and it seems to have fixed it :fingers crossed:

Edit:
Sigh...that didn't fix it either

yeah i have had this happen too, my hd goes to 100 percent usage for a min or so ... dont notice it in games

Woot!! I think I've got it. It appears to be update 938979 that was causing the problems. The weird thing is it sounded like my drive was starting from a dead stop every time. It's like it was shutting my drive down after every read/write or something 😕 Oh well, it's working fine now, and I don't have to hear that stupid drive spinning up all of the time 🙂

Is that the update that's supposed to fix the slow file transfer problem? Can you create a system restore and try installing that update again? It might be a weird coincidence somewhere, otherwise Microsoft will have issues when it releases this to WU.

I just reinstalled the update, and my drive is acting up again. It takes about 20 minutes for it to start, but once it does it's very regular.

I'm going to uninstall this again and reinstall the other patch to see if I have any problems.

Apparently Microsoft is well aware of the problem. I have it installed on two systems - no problems at all.
