I have an external CD burner with a USB connection. Can I take the drive out and replace it with a hard drive and will it work in most cases? Or is the hardware in the unit not a true IDE controller that can handle hard drives? Thanks in advance.

:) Yes, once inside, you should find a board with an IDE and power connector attached by solder or by wire but it should be a simpke matter of unplugging one drive and plugging in the other. Make sure to make the HDD's jumpers the same as the optical's as it comes out. :p
