Couple of weeks ago my computer went bang...... literally..... big plume of smoke, you know the deal.

Managed to save all except the power supply which i've replaced and one of the hard drives.... this is the problem.... it's got stuff on it i desparately need.

Right.....

it's completely dead, doesn't spin up on any computer i've tried it in, i had a little look inside (very bad thing to do i know) no physical damage to the disk or head, so i'm wondering if replacing the pcb is gonna work???

if replacing the pcb is a good option, how close a match does the new pcb have to be to the original, cos i'm having major problems locating an identical drive, would a pcb from an almost identical drive work?

can't afford to get it done professionally, just need to get it going long enough to get the data off of it....

thanks to anyone who knows about the specifics of hard drives and can help me out

if you opened it up and could see the shiny platters - that is BAAAADDDD.

one speck of dust can wipe out the whole drive if the spindle catches it.

As far as I know, it would have to be same make/model/revision - i wouldn't think it matters too much what week it was manufactured in. What sort of 'almost identical' are you thinking?

If the data is that important, it might be worth you considering spending $2000/£1500 for proffessional to do it. [sorry - I know you can't afford it] But if you screw up, that data is gone

the drive i have is an ibm deskstar 41.1 Gb

model: IC35L040AVVA07

could the control board be replaced with say, that of a larger drive eg

model: IC35L080AVVA07

as i have seen a couple of these on ebay, this is the kind of almost identical i'm thinking of....
