Hd failed, can't activate win 10 digital license... now what?

A friends laptop came with windows 8 and he installed the win 10 free upgrade, the hd failed so it got replaced, the windows key sticker on the bottom is smudged off, now windows 10 activation fails because there's no digital license or valid key.
Any solution for this?

If he did activate it, then, on a HD change, it will be automatic to re-activate.
Just download the win 10 ISO, and install that again, no need to input any keys.

In that case... try this:

1) Press Windows + R on your keyboard. Type in the run box slui 4

2) Next press the 'ENTER' key

3) Select your 'Country' from the list.

4) Choose the 'Phone Activation' option.

5) Stay on the phone (do not respond to any of the automated prompts) and wait for a person to help you with activation.

6) Explain your issue clearly to the support person.
