HD DVD vs. BluRay......

I have seen this topic posted before, but I would like to know everyones personal opinion and why you have this opinion. I feel as though we are back to the days of Beta vs. VHS. I have read quite a bit on both formats, and they both have their own advantages.

Now your opinions????

It's really simple: don't buy either until one has won.

I'll get a PS3 and hopefully Sony doesn't c0ck up the whole Blu Ray for the consumer movie stuff. More capacity is good.

more DRM is not 🙁
DRM is an issue for both Blu-ray and HD-DVD. I wouldn't bet the farm on either format soley for DRM concerns.

isn't HD-DVD supposed to be less of a PITA though?

Why are we debating on this when I don't even know who won between DVD-R and DVD+R. Is there even a clear winner yet?

Yes. HD-DVD is supposed to allow you to make a digital copy. I'm not sure how it works but supposedly all publishers are required to do this under HD-DVD. Blu-Ray has the same scheme but they aren't requiring publishers to enable the managed copy.

Just sit tight. Get a HDTV and a DVD player that up-samples video pretty well then just hang in there.
IMHO, I am not getting anything until I can play backups on it. I am not a net pirate or anything, but have you ever seen a 3 year old handle a DVD? They don't last long 🙂

It remains to be seen whether or not managed copy will be mandatory with Blu-ray. I'm sure everybody will find out in the next month or two.

Well no I don't think there is a winner, I much prefer -R though.

Yeah, i agree, i like the idea of being able to back that up to a comp, and then run it off of a virtual drive.

That way, you just have your movie library...plus, i would want to be able to put my movies on w/e PMP i have at the time...

nope. +R won for me... being able to set booktype on my dvds is very nice. Either way, both types of media IMO like to fail after a while and are very very delicate (ie, scratch very easily).

Given Sony's recent actions on DRM, you'd be hard-pressed to deny BD-DRM will be anything but extreme.

Yep. I was a -R fan, but ever since I could burn my +R's as dvd-roms, they win.

Whichever of the formats wins, we will lose...badly. Basically, film companies will pick a side and distribute their content on one of the two formats. There will be no clear winner, it will come out as a draw, trust me on this. MGM could put out their stuff on BluRay and Universal could go with HD-DVD, but either way there will be two different formats. Two different formats, means two different players. Two different players means more money for consumers, whether there is a combo player or not. The worst part is, you really couldn't choose a side, unless you decide to hate all movies from the company whose decided to pick the format you don't like.

unfortunately not enough people see this or else we could just completely boycott this next generation format, at least for movies anyway.

There is a problem right there. There will always be people who want to boycott something, but they don't want to break out and be a rebel. Those are the people who buy the stuff just because they don't know any better... the same people who buy all of those stupid Best Buy warranties.
