HD DVD video on a DVDR?

I friend of mine produced his own Moose hunting video (We live in Alaska) and the filmed it in hidef DV using a Sony video camera. He contracted out a company in Hong Kong to produce it for him in two formats, DVD and HD DVD. The price is quite a bit higher per unit for his HD discs (about 300% the cost!) and after reading about the new Toshiba that can record upto 2hrs of HD video onto a DVDR that got me thinking.

It's only like 82minutes long (less than the 2hr limit) and contains no DRM (obviously), so could he get HD DVD content on the cheap by using DVDRs?

Any software out there that can be used (legally!) to convert the HD video for use on the DVDR? I tried to do a simple cut and paste of the files using Nero and it didn't work (around 4gb of data).

I'm not asking how to copy copyrighted HD DVDs obviously because he owns the video rights and it doesn't have DRM like trademarked HD DVDs.

Thanks guys!

Well, would you want it to function as a DVD that a regular DVD player could view? If so, then there really isn't a way to do it as the video has to be encoded in MPEG-2. If you're just talking about storing the video on a DVD that you could then copy off onto a computer and view, then yeah, you could have it encoded into h.264 or something and more or less preserve the HD quality and allow it to fit on a DVD-R

No, I'd like it to be at least 720p if not the 1080p that the HD DVD discs natively contains. Apparently you can place the hi def content onto the DVDR and most readers will read it no problem.

I know it's possible as avsforum.com and several other websites I've topics on the subject, with no details.

You would have to encode the files to 480i.

Nope, you can burn HD DVD content to a standard DVD. It will only be readable in an HD DVD player though, but it'll work. You should be able to hold about 80min on a DVDR SL or 140min on a DVDR DL. That's using AVC or VC-1.

If you use MPEG2 it would be closer to 53min for SL and 96min for DL.

edit: That would all be for 1080p. If you bring it down to 720p it would hold even more.

That is what I was trying to ask, if I could copy the HD DVD data to a DVDR for use in HD DVD players.... The media is cheaper thand HD DVD media he's been buying and I figured I'd tell him he could save some money.
