HD DVD - do you care?

Kev

I don't know what the time table is for HD DVD to become accepted, but when it does, will you be updating your movie collection to HD DVDs? I'm probably not going to bother with HD DVD... the leap from VHS to DVD was huge, but DVD -> HD DVD is nowhere near as significant. Especially since I have an upconverting DVD player, I don't really see the point of HD DVDs.

I don't have a whole lot of DVD's in the first place. But yes, I will eventually get into HD DVD's (blu-ray, whatever)...I'm too used to HDTV at this point 😛

You weren't impressed with HD-DVDs when you tested a player and some discs?

When they get to be around $10 I'll probably replace some of the favorites in my collection that I still watch.

I plan on buying PS3 when it comes (only because I hear there's a GTA launch title, not because I'm a fanboy), so that will get me started with Blu-Ray. I'm an HD connoisseur, and my family plans to have two 1080P monitors in the house by the end of the year, so we would be switching.

I don't care at all.
We have an HDTV, but December was the first time that I used the progressive scan output from our DVD player.
I won't even replace my VHS movies with DVDs.

There's at least a decent chance your TV does a better job at converting a DVD to progressive scan than your DVD player.

You pay for the intellectual property right? That's why piracy is illegal. So doesn't that mean that they should trade you the HD DVDs for free?

LOTR DVDs..yes.

the rest, not likely.

btw, some older movies reveal lots of shortcomings even with regular DVDs, like the original Star Wars movies. These shortcomings didn't matter on VHS tapes, or when sitting some distance away in a theater, but don't look to good in High Definition.

What are you going to use as a provider for 1080p?

I don't own a single DVD, so I won't be owning any HD DVDs either.

Good point.

Do you need to test HD-DVDs to know what they'll look like? Or to know that the jump from VHS to DVD gave us such things as additional content (rare on VHS), random access, multiple language and subtitle tracks, and superior video and audio, and the only thing HD-DVD will off beyond that is even better video and (maybe) audio? For me, that's not enough to warrant replacing existing DVDs with HD-DVDs - although at some point I'll certainly buy an HD-DVD player and all NEW DVDs I buy will be HD-DVD. But I'm in no rush for that.
