HD-DIVX has already won the format war?

I overheard a guy talking at the gym saying that HD-DIVX has already won the format wars because Hollywood didnt move fast enough on determining if Blue ray or HD-DVD was going to be the next standard.

He then compared it to how the music industry caused the same problem because they didnt move quick enough when the MP3 revolution started. He said people got tired of waiting for HD content and HD-DIVX is the result because a group of people in hollywood cant get their act together. He also said when they do release a format it some russian 15 year old will defeat it within a week off in spring break so they should release it when school begins session so it has a longer life span. He was joking but I thought he was pretty funny.

What is the scoop on this? Anyone? Is HD-DIVX widespread?

I have to admit I am tired of waiting for BLUE RAY and/or HD-DVD. Wasnt WMV9 supposed to be the next HD?

HD-DIVX has not won the format war nor will it ever. The movie companies will ultimately decide what formats the consumers are allowed to choose from since they are the ones in control of the movies themselves. Most likely HD-DVD will win out intially because of its cheaper manufacturing costs.

I think he is leaning toward the darker side of media distribution much like the early napster days.

From reading it appears HD-DIVX files are small enough that you can fit several hours of HD Content on a standard DVD. Still reading.

I see there are several HD-DIVX DVD players as well coming out. Maybe there is more to this HD-DIVX thing than meets the eye?

List of HD-Divx players. Pricey Ouch.

Is this just for movie promotion because thats all I see are movie trailers in HD-DIVX?

eh $250 is not too bad considering the first dvd players were like $600, which is closer to what I expect the first BD and HD-DVD players to open at.

The problem with your comparison is that HD-divx is a software format, while Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are physical disc formats. So, HD-divx could be put on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD discs.

divx is not a wildly popular format among the masses. It'd be like comparing normal divx to DVD. Did DVD sales drop off because of divx? Don't think so. Granted things are a little different this time, however in general most people aren't aware of divx.

I too would be interested in a comparison of HD-divx against H.264 or WMV-HD, or MPEG-4 or whatever the hi-def MPEG format is (I think MPEG-2 can be HD as well). I recall hearing some good things, however, it seems that there is a lot of compression involved, which typically is not a good thing.

I recall hearing that early HD-DVD players are expected to cost over $1000, but that seems way too out of reach. Even if it cost that much to make them, I would think they'd sell them for less because they wouldn't get too much of a market. With the onslaught of Media Center PCs (and PCs in general with HD-DVD or BD-ROM drives) and the Playstation 3, the price for players should drop fairly significantly pretty quickly, at least relatively to VHS or DVD.

Its kinda ignorant to want Blu-Ray to fail just because you don't like Sony. There is a lot more involved than that. To be honest, even if you don't like Sony and it in turn causes you to not like Blu-Ray, you shouldn't necessarily be a fan of HD-DVD either.

I really really hope that Sony´s PS3 allowes them to win the masses nwith blue ray. The format is so much better than HD-DVD. quicker, bigger. everything really. except a little more expencive at first. DVD to HD-DVD is not a big enough leap in my mind. Also at the moment there are some movies in HD WMV format. they come on DVD´s.
Peaple compare this war to VHS and (ahh)Beta but i think that if people are exposed to both formats there is a bigger quality difference (more so quantity) than before. It is a percevable difference in storage size and it will affect peoples choices. Just ask yourself which you would rather have as your storage format in your pc if there was little difference in blank media between the two? i know where i would back my hard drive up.

Divx HD is just a codec and you can use current formats for delivery or media. Here's some HD trailers. Divx HD

No different than using any other MPEG4 compression variant to compress media, and its competing with VC1, H264 and xvid...not Blue Ray or HD DVD.

Im really impressed by the quality of these trailers but like stated before I dont think its so widespread but maybe it is beginning to? If more DVD players support it then it will grow but my guess is you need some power for this which is the reason those players are so much. I did find one on newegg for $219.00 refurbished which isnt bad.

I also tried to find places where you can buy HD-DIVX movie but couldnt find any.

I've done a bit of experimenting with that, and it is nice...especially the beta version that makes use of dual/multiple processors. The only problem I have though, and I'm probably just missing something really obvious, is that playback doesn't seem to work well at all, it hits one core at 100% (50% overall), and seems to drop frames like crazy. 😕
