How do I tell what's wrong...At startup, only thing going on is a flashing on & off cursor in the upper left corner of my monitor screen..It's a WD 300 gig.

As soon as I put another HD in my rig, everything was fine. What's the least expensive way to tell if the data is recoverable from the drive?
