Have a ThinkPad hard drive which has been giving problems all week starting until today when the master file table is corrupt. While the disk is detected in the T43 BIOS, several disk recovery tools cannot recover any data.

If MFT is corrupted, is the only way to solve this is to reformat the HD and reinstall windows? Or is it really a hardware problem with a damaged hard drive?

I suggest that you replace that hdd and use it as a external pocket hdd. It may have a problem and as stated before, I wouldn't want to trust it with any of my data.
