Is it really worth getting a HD cooler? Will it improve the performance of the HD, or just the life?
Thx
Kerm

if you have a hot hard drive, it will definatly prolong the life, but not the preformance. if you have a sub 7200 rpm drive, i wouldn't really worry about it. i have a Maxtor ATA66 7200rpm drive, and it just gets slightly warm after alot of working, and i also can't add a cooler because of where dell put it

Thanks, I just ordered an IBM 30 gig 7200 rpm 75gxp.
If anyone could tell me if these HD's are known to heat up or not, I would appreciate it :)
Thanks,
Kerm

I have a WD 20.1GB 7200rpm HDD and use a cooler I ordered from 2cooltek. You've got a great hard drive. Why not spend a few bucks and keep it cool? Besides, IMHO, the cooler grill looks better than a blank face plate in the front of the case. :D

I don't know about prolonging life because I have a slim cooler on all my drives. Make a BIG difference in temperature drop. But I doubt it'll prolong life. In theory, it's suppose to, cooler drives.

1 Maxtor Diamond Max 40 gig - RMAed after 2 month
2 Quantum Fireball SE SCSI - RMAed after 1 year and 1.2 year
1 Quantum Fireball SE IDE - RMAed after 1.5 year
1 Quantum Atlas 10K SCSI - RMAed after 6 month
1 Quantum Atlas 10K SCSI - making scretching noise.

All these guys are expensive and on cooler, I probably use my computer 1-2 hour a day at night and about 3-4 times a week. I work 18hour days. So They're bearly used and still failed. Keeping it good is good but don't expect any miracles.. when they decide to quit, they'll quit. Cooler or not.

look at the old Macs we have in our school. they're on all day, constant use(these things are mac classics, and lc450's) and they still work. so some drives can last without it, some need it. my Maxtor drive had to be RMA'ed after 2 months because it failed. i don't think it was heat related though

Yes, the Ultimate Harddrive Coolers quiet the drives a good bit compared to not having them on. I suppose the large heatsink absorbs the noise.

as long as u got decent case temps, and sufficent air space between the HD and other stuff (devices or case walls) ur fine.

I've just go the ibm 30gig 7200rpm and I've had no problems with heat, warm but noting to worry about, depends on what case cooling you've got??? I've got two 120mm, front and blowhole and 80mm at the back.

well cooler than my old 4.3gig sumsang which is now in my friends computer and no case cooling!

The Ultimate Hard Drive coolers are VERY quiet.

And... if you're using the IBM drives YOU NEED THEM! Those drives run VERY HOT.

In this case, I ran 4 IBMs in a RAID. People thought that the 8 fans would be noisy, but the rig is actually VERY quiet.

The $23 price at 2cooltek is VERY fair, especially considering my work sells them for $32! And Ian is a trustworthy fellow. I've bought many a fan from him. ;)

Do what I did.

I took out the 3.5 srive cage, and put a blow hole in the bottom.
Then I stuck a fan that blows directly through the blow hole, on to my hard drive right above it.

i got the istorms for my drives. yeah it's a little more expensive at $30 each but the benefits is that it is the quietest and also the best at filtering the dust. (worse thing that could happen is that the fans create a layer of dust on your drives) also, i think it's kinda cool looking. (but i know others would disagree)

so the istorm has my vote.

I don´t know why jonny suggest that IBM drives get HOT.
The NEW 75GXP Models like the 46 gigger are only warm to the touch
in a machine that i keep running 24/7. I have experiences with multiple IBM drives and only my U2W drives.

I am really fond of my cooldrives 4002. Although i don´t use the fans because they are rather noisy. Since they are lrage heatsinks, they work also quite nice without fans...

Rellik: I suggest the IBM drives get hot because they are.

Do you think I pull this shít out of my ass?

In my rigs I've used IBM, Maxtor and WD and the IBM drives are NOTICABLEY hotter than Maxtor or WD.

I can say that on a good point, they are much quieter than others, but you can't POSSIBLY say they run "cool".
