HD configuration

I have 2 WD 120GB HDs, 1 WD 40GB HD, and 1 DVD+-RW drive. My MB has only 1 primary and 1 secondary IDE ports. Would it be unwise to place one of the 120GB drives on the secondary IDE? I primarily want to use it to backup the other 2 drives. If there is no great limiting factor, should I set this drive as a Master to or a Slave of the DVD+-RW? Why on either response?

Thanks,

Tom

Put the DVD as master. Writers like to be the master drive and a backup drive is fine as slave. I my box, attaching a hd and an optical is a mess. I would get a cheap pci to ide raid card (newegg has one for $21 shipped) and raid the 120's.

The reality is that more likely than not, it doesn't matter what you do. It will work how ever you set it up. I've used computers with one setup or the other, never with any problems. I certainly wouldn't use a RAID array to house backups of my primary drive's data. Unless you plan to back up the array somewhere else.
