Hey

So I got a LC52D62U Sharp about a month ago.

I have basic coax cable going to the TV.

I used Digital Scanning and I found TONS of Digital Cable channels, not all but alot. Note, I do not recieve normal digital cable but the TV found them.

I also found 2 HD Sports channels and National Geographic HD.

The problem I have is the 3 HD channels get no sound at all.

I am guessing this is working as intended, ie encrypted audio that I cannot decrypt unless I have a HD Cable box from my provider.

Any insight is greatly appreciated :)

HD Hockey looks so nice!! Too bad no sound

You should be able to receive the local HD channels for free. Do they have sound?

Nah, they can't encrypt only the audio. Either the channel itself is encrypted or its not, so if you're pulling in the video then the sound is there somewhere too. Are you outputting the sound to a receiver, or just using the TV speakers?

Just using TV speakers. All the other digital channels will get Audio, and of course the normal cable channels will also get Audio

What about the local HD channels? (ex. NBC, ABC etc.)

The three channels described are the only HD channels that I get, so I cannot check others

hrm, something seems wrong then. You should definitely be able to get them. Perhaps it might be worth it to call your cable company to find out why you are not.

That might explain it. It's possible there's a trap on your cable line so you aren't receiving the audio frequencies.

Are you paying for digital cable? If not and you want to receive digital cable channels, you should be.

If you read the first post I state I only have basic cable, but my tv in fact found digital + 3 HD channels.

The HD channels are without Audio and that is what my discussion is based on.

Oh well, I'll wait until my HD Satellite box arrives :)

I had this same issue, OP. I briefly bought one of the Samsung QAM tuners as my TV doesn't have one of it's own (has ATSC though, and when I can get a signal, it is stunning. Especially with the PBS stations).

I have basic non-digital through RCN, no box, so I scanned for digital channels using the Samsung. I received several channels, and about 12 or so HD channels that RCN hadn't encrypted. However, HDNet and HDNet movie were without audio.

according to some thread over at AVS (sorry, forget which one, but I believe it was one of the local HD provider threads. I clicked on the one related to RCN in my area-Chicago), this is normal. It seems that this is what you get when picking up digital QAM channels, at least through RCN. I'm not sure if it's a filter that they can place, or if it is digital-subscription related, but it sounds like you and I have very similar setups.
