HD Capacity Issue (Plz help noob complete first build)

So just finished my first build and everything seems to be hooked up correctly🙂 (fans spinning, bios is recognizeing everything).

However when I went to install XP and partition my HD it is telling me my HD capacity is only ~130 GB (I don't have exact # on me) when it is a 160GB drive. So I went thru and installed XP anyway and when checked in XP still showed my HD as ~130 GB so I went and deleted the partition and will start from scratch.

Any idea why this is happening and do I need to do something about it ( I would rather not lose the 30gb). My bios shows my HD as 160 GB. Any help would be appreciated, I would love to get my new rig up and running since I am fiending to see how COD2 runs. Some basics on my system below.

Seagate HD 160G| ST3160812AS - OEM

So I am not sure if you should lose THAT much memory but everytime you purchase a hard drive, in actuality you get less memory. For example my 250GB external hard drive is recognized as 232GB by windows. It has to do with numbers and stuff. What is the EXACT gigabyte that windows recognizes the hard drive as? If it's like upper 130s you should be fine. Wait for a more senior member to post. They can explain it inside and out.

It's because you are using Windows XP disk with no service packs, so and drive over 132GB will show up improperly. After you install windows, you need to install SP2 and then go under disk management and partition the extra 30GB of hard drive space into drive D: or whatever letter.

🙂

Thanks for the replies so far. My install disc is XP Pro (without SP 1 or 2) so I am guessing what I am stuck with is doing initial install with 137 GB max, and then run update for SP 2 and then just create a second partition for my additional ~20gb. Please confirm if that is pretty much the route I need to go.

Also second question(never had multiple paritions🙂); does it matter what I put on my second smaller partition from a performance perspective?Should I just keep all my music on there or all my games or what?

Or slipstream and burn a SP2 install disk and you can use all the space from the get go...
