ok so i got my 2005FP yesterday and this morning i hooked her to my xbox and the Cable box via the DVI conenctor.

The DVI conenctor gave me a picture and then quickly flashed HDCP Authenticaion failed. (or something close to that)
i thought maybe i had to call Mediacom and have them enable the signal somehow or flash my box. Which is already the HD cable box.

The technician said that the DVI connector isnt even working because, several companies, such as On Demand are taking cable companies to court over the DVI usage. They claim its possible to record movies and bypass the copywrite using the DVI.
I said i can hook it to my tv tuner right now and record all i want already why is this any different ?

I then said. Ok, given that, how is mediacom even able to claim channels are HD when you can not get HD signals via composite or S-Video. its just not possible.
He said they just do it .
I said sounds to me that mediacom is not only choosing to use false advertising but they are admitting they dont have HD and are continueing to do so.
I then said it sounds to me like maybe i should start a class action suit against mediacom.
(seeing if he will call my bluff) He then said "Why dont i get you down to customer service"
I said no thats fine no one down there will be able to take care of this.

Now the question arises.

1)
how can cable companies claim to have HD channels when to the best of my knowledge you cant even get HD from Composite or S-Video.
2)
why has no one called the cable companies out and sought action against them for not have HD enabled boxes ?

What would have happened if i had, like so many others have done, went out and spent thousands on a Plasma or LCD and now they cant even use true HD cuz of this. ?

am i totally misinformed on the HD signal abilities of composite and s-video and i should just shut up ?

If your cable box is HD capable it should have component out that looks like three composite outs (red/blue/green) which will carry an HD signal through analog.

If they have composite video only, then it's not HD. However, you may be mixing up the composite video and YrPrBr (not sure if that's the right abreviatiation or whatever). The hd cables look very similar to the regular componet video, 3 cables which I belive are green, blue, and red. The reason the dvi did not work on your monitor is because the 2005fpw is does not have hdcp.

The Dell Monitor's DVI input does not support HDCP so you will not be able to view copy-protected content delivered in digital form, hence HDTV. It is a PC Monitor, not TV. There have been like 10 threads about this in Off Topic.

The reason you couldn't use the box on your 2005FPW is because the DVI connection does not have HDCP, which is necessary to decode high def content on a lot of channels. It is a copyright measure that channels are using. If you were hooking your cable box up to a TV w/DVI it would be different, because they have HDCP built-in. You need to do your research before you buy something, or get yourself into something like that. It seems in this situation that it is nobody's fault but your own.

BTW, you can get HD over component, which every HD Cable Box I have ever seen has. Unfortunately, your computer monitor does not have it.

ok thats what i was thinking a bit ago cuz i forgot about the YrPrBr

you can still get HD via YrPrBr ? i didnt think Composite, aka RCA was able to carry that type fo signal. all YrPrBr is , is the seperate color channels. i suppose since its seperated it could carry a different type of signal. It's still no the best way to carry a signal but ... oh well.

thanks for the input fellas.
i am talking to a buddy on cox and he says their DVI is enabled. so the whole DVI thing sounds bogus to me.

and yeah i know the dell isnt HDCP enabled but i didnt know until not that the DVI on the cable box actually required that.

thanks again fellas for correcting me

Did you even read any of the responses? YES YOU CAN GET HD SIGNAL VIA COMPONENT CABLES AKA YPbPr.

Fer Christ's sake, it's YPbPr, not YPrBr. Get it straight.

And yes, you can send digital HD signals over component. You can also send regular old 480i SDTV that way, but this is sort of wasteful. :p

I've never heard of a cable company not being able to use DVI with HDCP... the whole point of HDCP is that it's encrypted! I strongly suspect the guy you talked to was telling you the wrong information.
