Okay folks, I'm a bit sleepy and not really thinking this morning, so I'll ask others who may know: my system already has four IDE units incorporated (HD+internal zip, CD/RW+CD). If I want to add another hd, can I just plug in an ide controller card and route the extra hd that way??? I have a Promise ATA66 controller card that's currently idle and would be the easiest solution, but will my system accept it in that configuration???

W98 v2
SOYO VTA mb
AMD 1.2 athalon
256 megs ram

any help or opinions will be appreciated. thanks

Yup, that's fine. You shouldn't have any problems. Just remember to install the PCI Controller's drivers.

thanks AndyHui; thought it should work. Had to resort to fudging with the CMOS once before and basically disabled the on-board ide connectors in favor of the promise controller; didn't want to go that route again so hopefully this'll work. 'Later

You'd only need to do that if you wanted to boot from the hard drive that is connected to the Promise Controller.
