Tonight, I finally broke down and bought an hd 6970. I want it to be quiet and powerful for a while, with the option to double the power in the future.

this is a three-fan jobbie, that i hope will spin fairly quietly. No reviews to speak of, though...so i'm out on a limb already.
I currently have a:
1090T @ 3.8ghz
16gb of 12800 (it crunches data while i'm at work, hence the 6cores and overload on ram)
asus crosshair iv 890fx chipset
antec trio 650w (4!! years old now)
hd4870 512mb installed and a second one in a drawer...
edit, and I just got (tonight) an OCZ Vertex 3 120gb, to match 2x OCZ vertex 2 60gb and 2x samsung 160gb single-platters that are going on 5 years old...but I really like fewer moving parts!
I'm thinking I should get $100-$125 out of both 4870's on auction after testing the second. The first has some extravagant thermalright cooling (vrm, chip, memchip) installed, but i also have the original part. I have a fan twistied on, but it would work bonkers for an HPTC without. I can post pics if it would help 🙂
I was waiting, and waiting, and waiting for something good enough to beat 2x 4870s, but got tired of wating for hdGetitdone 7xxx nVidia Feedpwr_____. So I had a few brews tonight and plopped down a bit of dosh.
I want to buy a second one of these eventually, with an upgraded PSU. It will be time for a new psu in another year anyway, I reckon. Tell me I didn't spend my money foolishly please? Or tell me how to fix it, and I'll do that instead 🙂
Thanks in advance. I spend about $500 on computer parts once per year, and about $1000 every three years, btw. So, I'm itching to fix something wrong if you'll help me identify it quickly! 🙂
edit the second: sorry...I want to play Lotro on two monitors, and BF3 on one. One being 19x12, 2 being 19x12 and just 1 step down, i don't recall exact. 1900x1000 seems about right
edit again....and i don't usually spend money on tech frivolously. i have been waiting patiently on the next top-end gpu gen to arrive, and it keeps on getting younger, lol. the 4870 512mb has been WONDERFUL, enough so that i tinkered with CF but was unhappy with the noise...but now even that (2x4870 512mb) is getting a bit dated. i'm looking to part with the super quiet one for someone building an htpc, and the second for someone wanting a second $30-$50 CF card who is willing to compromise a bit on latest tech versus frames per second versus price if that is viable. i just don't know where to start or if i've goofed up...
edit the third: and i'm sorry if i made this sound i'm just selling something. i haven't even started the process yet of getting rid of my old tech, i was just bouncing the whole gpu upgrade thing off of the more experienced folks out there. i'll remove any references to my current stuff and what i'm thinking i might get for it if that is considered bad form. I'm just very price-conscious and that comes in to play whenever I start talking about upgrades among folks that i might consider friends.
edit the final: if an admin might add 6970 to the topic, i would very much appreciate it. i should have been more specific in my subject.
