HD 5870 CF: Problem with user defined fan speed not sticking in MSI Afterburner

I've got a CF 5870 setup with temps at full load 80 degrees with default fan speeds (20%). When I place my hand behind the case where the video cards exhaust it is terribly HOT!

When I've tried to manipulate the fan speed setting on MSI Afterburner and up it to 35-40% speed, i've noticed that temps take a huge dip to about 55-65 degrees on load. I set up the fan speed to gradually increase as the temps rise. So at 40-50 degrees it runs at 25%, 50-70degrees: 35% and 70+degrees: 40%. 40% fan speed however is extremely loud and very distracting (but that's another issue altogether).

I've set the profiles correctly and hit 'apply'. It all works....... for about 15 minutes or so.

The fans just default back down to 20% with no explanation, regardless of what temperature the GPU is at. I'm not sure what is overriding my adjusted settings, and I would prefer it to run at 33-40% fan speeds when I'm gaming! I then have to alt+tab and manually force the "auto" checkbox under fan speed again. It's pretty off-putting and downright annoying after a while.

Does anyone have any issues with MSI afterburner doing this? Or is there another problem here that I'm not familiar with? I'm using the most UTD version of MSI afterburner, but i've also tried the last 2 versions as well.

The biggest issue is that the fan profile just doesn't seem to stick for longer than 15-20 minutes, and before I know it the 5870's are running at 90 degrees or so when I take a look at my G15 LCD screen! I don't know if it's detrimental to the card to run at such temperatures, so I hope to have this issue resolved soon 🙁

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I've noticed that when I set Profile 1 with 100% fan speeds it drops to 40% right away. You gotta keep setting it to the desired fan speed until it stops moving. Simple as that.

thanks for the offer of advice there FC, but unfortunately that didn't do anything 🙁

I've edited the thread title and contents for some more clarity. I hope this provides people with a bit more information regarding this issue.

Thanks again!
