if that cd2 isn't overclocked than a 5870 won't make a huge difference. I have an e6750 at 3.5 and with a gtx 260 i still have to run the game on low 1440x900 (native res)for it to be playable and my gtx 260 is lightyears ahead of a 9600gt

It isn't overclocked but I could if I wanted. Man, so would I have to completely give my system an overhaul if I want to play BF3 on high to ultra? I figured my video card was the main hold back.

Yeah, BF3 at ultra is light years beyond what your system is capable of. This graph sums up the problem:

So first you have to get a quad. But even then, a 5870 (equivalent to 6950) isn't going to push ultra:

Similar situation, I have the Xeon E3110, basically the C2D E8400 in disguise, and a 4870 1GB. 4GB of memory...standard WD Blue drive for now. Game at 1920x1080.

Planning on an upgrade sometime this next year though, don't get much time to play, and something in the system isn't quite enough for FSX at that res with nice details. Seems like this would be a good video upgrade for the price though...and I could build a new system later on around it (thinking with SSD and quad core etc). For any other game I have I have no problems with my system.

Oh my oh my. Well, time to gun for a complete overhaul then. Exciting to me, quite a downer for my wallet!

FSX is fairly CPU-limited, or so I've read (I don't own it). I think you should try overclocking the CPU before buying a new GPU.

LOL...that's the spirit!

Yeah this board has no OC options whatsoever. Not going to invest in new parts for an old system at this point anyway--well, outside of a video card which could transfer to a new system easily enough. Budget is a big concern (arrrgghh, married :hmm:) so bang for buck is always priority. From that perspective, do you think this looks good?

Bang for buck this deal is unbeatable for games that are not cpu-limited.

Went ahead and pulled the trigger. Picked up a modular OCZ 600W power supply as well, $40 after rebate at Newegg. Thanks!

You're going to need that PS to drive this card if you had something less. I'd say 600W is the minimum with some strong rails.

Yeah I had a Zalman 600w and that thing stuttered with booting up with a 5870 (granted I had an overclocked 2500k at 4.8ghz).

However, no problems whatsoever with a Corsair tx750 or 750w PC Power & Cooling Quad Silencer.
Both, especially the PC Power and Cooling, have strong rails.

I bet it goes on sale at Ben's Outlet for $5-10 cheaper in a couple of weeks like the 5850 did LOL...

Lol, those graph comparison have 4xAA and 16xAF. Maybe I should make note that turning those down would help significantly in the fps. And yes, we're running on high. Nephews been playing since beta. Been playing Skyrim on high as well (game default).

So I'm not sure why some are you are having so much trouble but we're just fine here :)

Think I have an Antec 400-something watt psu driving it currently, so the new one should have plenty of headroom. From what I've seen online FSX is just poorly written and optimized. Supposedly better performance with Nvidia cards as well...hoping brute force solves that :D I have the whole HOTAS including pedals setup plus TrackIR so smooth running would be nice...along with some Arma 2 heli action.

Hopefully this card gets here by Christmas.

Got the card yesterday, seems to be running fine along with the new power supply, need to do some real testing yet. But seems okay so far.

Damn. We got some serious lurkers up in the Hot Deals section dont we?
Or is it just 2nd accounts?
:sneaky:

I would like to jump on this but I went back to Nvidia and will probably stay there awhile.
