I am looking to finally upgrade from my 9600gt but I don't really know how to judge ATI cards, could someone point me in the right direction? I intend to use the system for gaming.

Well you give us too little info. The 5850 is much faster but it's also twice the price. What kind of system do you have right now, what games do you play and at what resolution? Do you have a budget for your purchase? What resolution do you want to play at? What kind of graphics settings do you want in your games?

The 5770 at 140$ or less is quite a bargain but if you plan on overclocking the 5850s can go to 900MHz and beyond(from stock 725) for a massive performance gain.

Do you have a budget? What games do you play? What CPU do you use? And how big is your monitor? These are all things we'll need to know before we can help.

Edit: Dark4ng3l beat me to it. But as you can see, these are the questions we'll all be asking you.

The 5770 is faster than your 9600gt, but if you're looking for a huge jump, you'll need to go for the 5850. In between the two cards in price and performance is Nvidia's new GTX 460, which you should also consider.

I chose the 5770 for my ~$500 budget build because it was less than half the price of a 5850 for about 65-70% of the performance. I am happy with the purchase and performance for the price, however with a heavily graphic modded Oblivion I still get massive slowdowns even at 1440x900 with 2x/8x AA/AF.

Basically it comes down to what you can afford.

OP for questions like this you need to provide all the info you can. we need to know what the entire rest of your system looks like including psu and what res you play at.

Wait a week or two to see if ATI drops the price of the 5850 now that the GTX460 is out.

Right now the GTX460 is the fastest DX11 card under $200 (or $220 for the 1 GB model).

If you buy one with a good fan (avoid the Zotac) then it also has similar good power, heat, and noise performance to the ATI cards. It's not a power-suckling heat-monster like the 470/480 and ATI 5830.

gtx 460 and use your 9600gt as a physx card if you can.
why not just sell the 9600gt? why have a card in his system that can only be utilized in 2 or 3 games that he may not even play? please dont give the upcoming Mafia 2 as an example because its going to require much more gpu power and much faster card for physx anyway.

Another vote for waiting how Ati responds to the 460 1gb - atm the 5850 is too expensive for the performance gains you get over a 460 and I'd think Ati will drop prices on them.

I voted for the 5850 because it offers better performance, however at its current price the 460 is a better buy. If it were drop back to its original MSRP (or even lower!) it would be a no brainer. I got lucky and snagged up two at that price plus Bing CB.

Count me in as a vote for neither. 460 1gb is much faster than a 5770 and a better performer/$ than the 5850.

As the pretty happy owner of a 5770, I think I'll point at the 460 1GB as the new champion of midrange cards. Yeah it's more expensive, but I think it's quite a bit more stout and if you're running 1920 or so (cheap monitors these days) then you're gonna want that extra power. If you're running 1680 or less, don't game all that much, and/or have a pretty limited budget, I don't think you'd hate a 5770.

they are both overpriced now. unless prices go down on amd mid range cards you will be better off with nvidia.
