HD 4890 and OCZ Powerstream 600W? Compute?

So my hd4890 finally came in the mail and much to my chagrin, my ocz psu had no 8 pin connector. Now, this power supply is a beast and has handled eveything I've thrown at it but I'm wondering if I can use the two adapters that came with the card: 2x molex to 6 pin and a 6 pin to 8 pin.

Just use the 6 pin to 8 pin adaptor. The difference between a 6 pin and a 8 pin pci-e is the 8 pin has 2 extra grounds on it and can provide up to a 150w vs 75w.

Edit: I was wrong there are 3 12v not 2 on a 6-pin

I should mention that my power supply only has the one 6 pin plug

You'll be fine. A 4890 uses between 110-130w.

Then use the 2 molex for the 6-pin and the 6-8pin for the 8-pin. As long as you don't plug anything upside down, you won't burn out your card.

Welp - just gave this a shot and got a very unfriendly "YOU DO NOT HAVE THE PROPER CONNECTORS ATTACHED TO THE VIDEO CARD FROM YOUR POWER SUPPLY. DO NOT PASS GO. DO NOT COLLECT $200." Something is amiss. Not enough 12v juice?

That PSU has 2 +12v rails correct? One has 20A and the other has 18A. Also noticed that PSU is a bit oldschool. You should have at least 40A+ to run that card.

Out of curiosity, which 4890 did you get? Mine (Sapphire Vapor-X) has two 6-pin connectors.

My Sapphire 4890 (not vapor x) has a 6 and an 8 pin, i've run it with 2 x 6 pin connectors before on a 400W when they suggest 500W minimum

If you look at the pictures it's 1x8 + 1x6. Which is actually kind of weird, because Asus's original 4890 was 2x6.

Can you plug a 6 pin connector into an 8 pin, like you can with an ATX 20 pin into an ATX 24 pin?

Mechanically yes, electrically it depends on the card. I think the only card that actually did that was the 2900XT (you needed 8 pin power for overclocking). The rest just outright design to spec; you'll only find an 8 pin power connector if it really does need 8 pin power.

I think this is the volt modded version, is why.

Should be fine with that, I ran a 4870X2 off of the 610W Corsair for a while and it worked perfectly fine.
