HD 4870 d1601 LED fix?

i originally wanted a low power gaming machine, so i went with 2 4670s in xfire. but recently i want a bit more horsepower, so i went ahead and bought a "broken" card off of ebay. a 4870 with the d1601 error LED. after some successful google-fu i found out that some people got over this by reseating the heatsink. i bought a ARCTIC COOLING Accelero L2 Pro for a new heatsink, but the 4870 still displays the error. when the card starts it up it does the usual 3 LEDs light up but the d1601 stays on. nothing gets hot, GPU heatsink, VRM heatsink, nor mem heatsinks. ive reseated it numerous times all trying different things and null. still no image on screen.
my question is there some way i can flash this to a regular 4870 BIOS to get around this?

I am experiencing the same problem, red led D1601 on cards under 48C. It take a while for it to glow and stays plus the card is showing artifacts. I did reseated the heatsink applied the thermal paste but it keeps coming back I think the core is damaged some how, I have to lower the core frequency to make it stable.

I would try baking it. You have nothing to lose if it is already broken. Baking works!
