Did ATI discontinue the HD 4870 1GB models?

I was looking on Newegg today and there is only 1 model on there. I just bought one of these cards this year and was looking at buying a second to crossfire it soon.

I was looking just a week or so ago and there were quite a few of them for sale.

Otherwise is it just in really high demand right now?

Yep, ATI is dropping 4xxx series, which is totally normal, just as the release of the 4xxx made them drop the 3xxx series. The current stock of 4000s are selling through, and they are being replaced by 5xxx series as they are produced.

Best bet might be to go to FS/T section here at AT :)

If I crossfire with a 4890, I will be limited to the speeds of my 4870 correct? Are there any other downsides with crossfiring with a 4890 as compared to a 4870?

Does anyone know if the prices on 4890's will be dropping anytime soon?

Makes sense. With a competing next gen part out there's little to no need to keep roughly equivalent parts around to compete for shelf space and attention. The 5750 replaces the 4770, 4830 and 4850 and the 5770 replaces the 4870.

It'll be interesting if NV quietly un-EOLed their midrange and up GT200 parts as well. They may not be cost or performance competitive, but people will line up to buy them on name alone. Doubly so considering the vast gulf in price and performance left by no ATI SKU between the 4670 and 5750.

If you do a 4890/4870 CF setup then the 4890 will end up running at a similar performance as the 4870 that it's matched up with. The higher you can clock that 4870 the better off you are.

There's no downsides that I know of now that the 4890 is only a $5 difference. The upside is the 4890 should run cooler and use less power than using another 4870. Also when CF doesn't work you'll have a faster card.

Here's a review using a 4890/4870 setup.

Didn't Apple buy up all/most of the remaining 48XX stock? I'm sure there was a thread about this somewhere.
