HD 4850 Crashes with updated drivers

Hey guys. I'm putting my old rig into service as a HTPC. It has a HD 4850 in it that has barely been used. I used the latest drivers from AMD and it crashes when navigating around windows.

I went to the trouble of reloading Win 7 64 Bit SP1, updated nothing, and then I immediately installed the CCC and latest drivers, same crash to a purple screen.

Using the old drivers, runs fine.

Any ideas on this? Could it be a hardware problem? I'm thinking it has to be driver conflict, but with almost nothing else loaded after a complete win 7 install, it still crashes.

the latest CCC suite is version 12.6, 7.24.12.

"AMD has moved to the AMD Radeon™ HD 4000, AMD Radeon HD 3000, and AMD Radeon HD 2000 Series new driver support model. These updates will focus on resolving application specific issues and critical updates. The reason for the shift in support policy is largely due to the fact that the AMD Radeon HD 4000, AMD Radeon HD 3000, and AMD Radeon HD 2000 Series have been optimized to their maximum potential from a performance and feature perspective."

I'll have to see what drivers I was using, probably a year old or so

Just retired the hd 4830 in my htpc last month.
7/24/2012 was the last one. Make sure you turn off that stupid driver update check it does.

I could go back and just use the old drivers. Kinda wanted to update all of the drivers though.

I found a note to myself from 9 months ago, right before I upgraded to my i7-2600K, that on my old rig, the one in question here, the latest AMD drivers crashed the video. I didn't explore the problem then since I was retiring the rig. Now I want to use it as a mild gaming, HTPC rig.

AFAIK 12.6 isn't supported by 4xxx.

yeah, I just looked online at some chat about 4000 series and using 12.3 instead. Silly me assumed if AMD said it was the proper driver then it was correct. Looks like I'll roll back to 12.3 and stay there. AMD sure is not gonna do anything else with these older cards.

Thanks!
