Ok, the 3870 has been installed for a few days now. I just now launched a game and realized I have no sound.

I am not using the HDMI for the card, just the onboard integrated.

Solution ?

I prefer the 'activate profile' route in CCC. You just change the .xml under the ACE folder and you have easy if not the same ease or easier access to running your desired fan speed as opposed to installing an app that does the same thing. That is the only thing I use those apps for anyways.

For fan control, ExperTool 4.0 for ATI works great.

You can use any of the temperature monitoring you mention. They are all close. i am using CCC for HD4870 and have used it for 2900 to monitor temps.

Your 3870 is dual slot, like the 2900p/xt right? It will keep your wife's case cool as the heat goes outside the case

The string is this: C:\Documents and Settings\***user name***\Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\Profiles

Here is the code to look for:

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="58" />

The bold are the things that were changed ... for this profile, my fan speed is 58%

open the file using notepad or choose the edit option

Also you want to make sure you tick 'Enable Overdrive'

this is the best way to control your fan speed, all others are second best

Yea, show all folders is always selected.

apopping, yea..its dual slot. Everytime I create a profile, it is not in the ACE folder. I guess I am saving it properly

If there is suppose to be a profiles folder within the ACE folder, there isnt.

I enabled overdrive, and created a profile. Any steps I am missing here ?

There are two ACE folders, you have the wrong string. I did this many times and almost gave up. The correct directory is:

C:\Documents and Settings\***user name***\Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\Profiles

Under ***username*** it might be administrator or something like that.

I about gave up as well. But...from your last post, I found it. Didn't know there were two strings. :thumbsup:

Did you see the profile you created? I just called my profiles by the fan speed percentage. For my 3870, i have 3 profile names. 58% 80% & 100% This also works for the 4870. And to think. The guy who was making ATI tools asked for somebody to give him a sample card to test it so he could make the app. But in reality, all i used that app for was to control my fans on my cards and to think most people want the app for fan control so buy him a card, is F*ckin ridiculous, haha.

Ok, I edited the xml. Now how do I make sure the fan is running at my edited speed ?

If you have the 'system tray menu' enabled through CCC, go to the icon in the lower right had corner of your screen, right click, move up to 'Activate Profile' and there you should see your profile name. I would start off with a fan speed of 100% so to see if your settings work and then go back and adjust for your noise threshold.

Ok, I got it. Thanks. Working great.

Now, in the auto-tune...it wont overclock past 780. But in Rivatuner it went to 905. What is the best tool for the overclocking ? And if you use one tool to overclock, can I still use CCC for the fan control ?

I don't overclock my vid cards. I'm not sure of them working together. I all together stopped using 3rd party fan/GPU apps because personally I think they caused my AMD system to become flaky. Now, I just use the .xml edit method.

Sorry I can't help you there man.

I used Rivatuner. Really the slide bar for the fan couldnt possibally get much easier. As soon as it is 4850 compat... I will be going back and saying to hell with editing .xml's and CCC.

The CCC profile system has to be one of the poorest implementations of profiles I have seen.

It is such a static, rigid system which does not allow for automatic changes. Ive modded a 120mm fan which is mounted to the side of my case to fit on the fan header of my HD4870 so I want it to spin at a nominal amount then ramp up through various stages as my HD4870 warms up.

Im waiting for a program that can do something useful like this for the HD48xx series.

I know on the 3850 I had the same problem. The sound driver for the HDMI output usurps the default sound device in windows. For XP you have to go into control panel > Sound and Audio Devices Properties > Audio Tab > Select Default Device to the proper source.

I did that, and I still have no sound. My selected source is Creative Audigy 4

I'm a little confused. Could someone please tell me step by step for an idiot how to set fan speed on an HD 4870? Creating profiles and such. I tried to follow what was said in the thread but I couldn't seem to get it to apply and increase my fan speed.

Edit: After tinkering, I got fan control working, thanks everyone!

Make sure windows is set to show hidden files.

First Enable Overdrive in the Catalyst Control Center.

Next Create a new Profile using the Profiles Manager in the CCC and make sure Save All Catalyst Control Center Settings is checked.

For Vista 32/64

Then go to the following location and open the following file for editing "C:\Users\Your Windows ID\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Your CCC Profile.XML. The xml file will have the same name as the Catalyst Profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

For XP 32/64

Then go to the following location and open the following file for editing "C:\Documents and Settings\Your Windows ID\Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\Your CCC Profile.XML. The xml file will have the same name as the Catalyst Profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

Now go down the page until you see the following lines in the XML file ...

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="23" />

Change the "Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value=" from "Automatic" to "Manual"

Then change "Property name="Want" value=" from "23" to your desired fan speed.

Save the file, then reload the Profile you just edited in the CCC. Done.
