Would an ATI HD 3870 ATI 512MB perform similar to either 8800GT / 8800GS ?

Some ATI HD 3870's 512MB are about 15% cheaper in UK , I was wondering if it would be worth buying one .

I'm rather surpised about this question as it is easily answer with google just by doing 3870 reviews...

Answer:
No, well I don't know but the 8800GS; but it does not perform on par with 8800GT, it's more or less on par with 9600GT. In any case with next gen cards coming out next month (June 16th-18th) I'd by last gen around their just for the even lower prices...

on certain games, the 3870 is comparable to a 8800GT . especially if the game has a lot of shader use. then it is much faster than a 9600gt. other than that, its more or less comparable to a 9600GT

8800gt is about 15% faster than a 3870 & that gap only widens if you want to use AA but you do get better media capabilities inc hdmi with ATI.

I'm in the UK as well so there's no $120 (£60) 512mb 8800gt's for us so i'd recommend waiting the 2 weeks (June 16th) for the new 4850 as it's going to cost $199-229 (prob £130 here) at launch and should be only a tad (5-10%) slower than the 9800gtx.

*Although it could also be good time to get a cheapo 3850 as scan were selling the powercolor model for £55 inc vat last week on 1 of their today only deals...

3870 SP is stronger than a 9600gt and so is 8800gs. 8800gs and 3870 has 2 things in common. It's raw performance is similar and usually beating out 9600gt but they both lose to 8800gt or 9600gt when AA is used since 3870 lacks the texture fillrate and 8800gs lacks bandwidth.

One thing about 3870 is that it's 4xAA performance takes a big nose dive but their 8xAA is very much equivalent to 8800gt or 9600gt.

err :( a goon :!

3870 is an good card and it does perform on par with 8800GT , just a little slower. Turn up the AA and res and you will see 3870 to be actually fast. Read a decent review :

What I have found is the 8800 GT performs a tiny bit better, maybe 4-5% better fps. However, the ATI drivers for Vista 64 are far more reliable and stable, so despite the fact that I own both cards I choose to use my Radeon in my gaming machine.

Most of their benchmarks show the 8800GT out performing the 3870 with or without AA/AF. The other 989774784 online reviews agree. I am not seeing how I was wrong.

I was looking at the Xbitlabs.com benchmarks. It looks about on par or maybe even slower than the 9600GT. Xbitlabs even states this in their conclusion, actually Xbitlabs says the 3850 loses in most benchmarks.

It seems to decisively win in about 3 or so games, but it also loses decisively to a 9600GT in an equal number of games. It other games, it seems to be slightly slower overall.
