Tomorrow evening, 05/26/2002, at 9:00 Eastern (8:00 Central,) HBO will air "In Memoriam: 9/11," a 65-minute tribute to the victims and heroes of a day none of us will ever forget.

At HBO's site, here, you can view clips from the show. There is also a beautiful and deeply moving "Tribute Mosaic" of voices, images, and artwork. You can prepare and submit your own. It takes quite a lot to bring me to tears, but this "Tribute Mosaic" broke my heart. In a good way.

Several people have asked me to re-post a poem that I wrote on that day. Here it is.

The Two Towers

The terror strikes, a sudden blinding flash
Of airborne fire, a rending, roaring crash,
A deafening thunderrush that shakes the city,
And the world watches, frozen numb with pity.
In furnace-blasts along the reeling air,
The sky goes black and crimson with the glare.
This we will remember:
Rains of ash storms roiling
Like blizzards in September,
Clouds of blackhearted flames boiling,
Twisted steel and splintered glass seas.
But although we weep today,
This has not brought us to our knees
Except to pray.

Call me cynical, but this is just a marketing gimmick for HBO. Since it's a paid subscription channel, it's not really being offered in the interests of the public. I like HBO, and they produce excellent shows, but if they were sincere in representing the interests of the public, they would offer this for free to broadcast stations.

Just tonight one of the Discovery/History type channels had a special on why the towers fell. Pretty interesting.

How so? HBO isn't a broadcast channel, they don't go for ratings like NBC, CBS, et al, do.

They may eventually package the program into a DVD for sale, but I imagine most of the proceeds will be donated to the various charitable funds.

I for one am going to watch it, and would like to buy it - simply because I don't want to forget. I am seeing a lot attitudes around where people seem to have forgotten already what happened to us, and I don't want to do that.

Xerox Man -

It's not being forgotten around here by me, my kids or my grandkids.

I'm not starting any new "rah-rah for the US" clubs, but I will fly the same flag that I have flown since it had 48 stars on this Memorial Day and on all the US holidays after that.

Even though I did not want to watch it because it hurts too much, I did.

I thought it was done very well and was narrated and hosted by Gulliani, who was quite an example during the crisis IMHO.

After watching it I disagree with you even more.

This was the first time I have seen some of the more "gruesome" footage since the actual day (live news coverage). I remember seeing most news organizations televising the jumpers at first, then they stopped showing it. HBO actually showed video and stills of people jumping, and one photo of some poor soul on the sidewalk after jumping.

This show was terrifying, but I think it is important to see really how bad that day was so we won't forget too soon.

My TiVo recorded it, and I watched it last night. It was very moving.. Also very eerie in the opening shot on the street where someone's filming and in the background you hear an airplane that keeps getting louder and louder; the camera pans upward in time to see the plane fly into the first Tower.

It reinforces my opinion that the people who are responsible for this have given up their inherent rights to the status of "human being" and have become ranked somewhere below "cockroach". Like any pest infestation, Al-Quaida needs to be exterminated to the last man.
