HBO greenlights 'American Gods,' will reportedly run 6 seasons

Has HBO found its next smash hit?

It seems quite likely. The network has announced that its adaptation of Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods' is moving forward finally, after a few years of being stuck in developmental purgatory.

'American Gods' will follow Shadow, who is preparing for release from prison when he learns that his beloved wife has been killed in a car crash. The hits keep coming for Shadow, who finds himself working for a salesman named Mr. Wednesday. Shadow finds himself on the front line of a bigger battle in America, between old and new gods.

No casting news has been revealed yet, but HBO is banking heavily on the Tom Hanks produced series. The network is spending around $40 million per season, of which it intends to do six. Each season will be comprised of 10 to 12 episodes.

6 seasons? That seems like a lot if airtime (72 episodes) for a single book that took me about 6 hours to read.

Unless there was a sequel I missed.

We'll check it out when it comes out. Need something to watch when Game of Thrones is off.

Nope. I asked Gaiman about this on Saturday at the signing and he said it was an old rumor that resurfaced. Though he had been approached (years ago) and talked about it nothing was ever agreed to and it was put on the back burner. As far as he knew (as of 6/29/13) nothing had changed with it.

I think it could make for a great 2 hour movie, not so sure about a 72 hour series, lol. :)

Interesting. I spoke with him today, and he said he wouldn't confirm it until the pilot was shot and approved, but it is being worked on. Apparently, he has about 3 other projects in the works as well, with his new novel "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" potentially becoming a movie. Again, not confirmed, because he doesn't do that.

I'd even say it'd be an okay as a 6-8 hour Mitchener-length miniseries. It wasn't a short book by any stretch, and there were a lot of little tidbits and interactions that might have taken 1 minute to read, but would be a good 5-10 minutes of screen time if you were trying to tell a story visually.

And even scenes which must have happened, but weren't actually scenes in the book.
(Laura clawing her way out of the grave, for instance.)

I don't click threads so I can read Wikipedia articles.

That said, I managed to read about three sentences before I closed it. Summary: more ****** fantasy crap. No thanks.

Um the book isn't all that exciting. Not sure how they're going to make a 72 hour show out of it. I see them casting Liam Neeson as Wednesday though.

HBO must be out of their mind.

Why would a network order 6 seasons (each one costing 40 mill to produce?!) of a show that hasn't even aired one episode? They are quite confident in Tom Hanks! He is a cool dude but that's still one hell of a big gamble. Hanks and Spielberg did "The Pacific" and no one liked that.
