I wonder how it will compare to that ABC special taht was on about a month ago as far as the controversy (sp?) that it creates

Well after watching that, I can see why Diebold didn't want HBO to air the show.

So many people are going to get fired after the word gets spread.

Well one of the main things it showed was how easy it was to hack into and change the voting results in a Diebold voting machine, which is used by about 80% of the nation's precincts. What is even more concerning is that there is no way of knowing if they could be tampered with or not.

There was also a ton of footage of precincts throwing away poll tapes (which is highly illegal) and several precincts whose voting records were waaaay off from what they really should have been.

Very interesting...if you got HBO they will probably be reshowing it several times throughout the next few days.

Watched it last night. Quit interesting.

Is there a Diebold rebuttal anywhere?

I only watched part of it, but how would one gain access to these machines? From what I understood, she had the source code and the access database to show how someone could change it, but you can't just plug up a computer to thte voting machine and change things, right?

Well, they showed how you can "hack" the vote just by modifying one of the memory cards. I also noticed that there were stacks of these lying around in the open at one of the voting places they showed. Plus, the machine that actually counts all the votes is a computer, so there wouldn't be a need to hook anything up to it.

But wouldn't any system whith physical access be just as easy to hack?

If you had the passwords & source code

That is pretty much Diebold's rebuttal. If you look at the machine the memory card is supposed to be locked in the machine. The show was demonstrating if someone were able to get a card they would be able to alter the card so that votes could be added to a candidate (and subtracted from another) without any trace, even on the output tape. They were all excited because Diebold had told them that they didn't think what they were proposing was possible.

The thing that got me was that at the end they had all the people crying about the fraud and stuff when all they did was demonstrate that it was possible, not that anything actually happened.

They also showed how the CEO of Diebold, who represents a company that is supposed to be completely neutral, was basically guaranteeing a Bush presidential victory. Combine that with the fact that anyone within the Diebold corporation could have hacked memory cards to give Bush more votes before even distributing them to the precincts. Still though, it is impossible to tell if that actually happened or not and perhaps that's how Diebold wanted it to be in the first place.

They need to change the voting system. It's really easy, fill sporting stadiums with voters. On the jumbo-tron you put up a picture of the candidate. Then you just use a decible meter to determine who gets booed the most. Do this until everyone has had a chance to boo, then tabulate it that way. It's about as accurate as the current system, but it allows the 30-40 thousand people that are there to know the outcome of their vote. When you leave you get a ticket with the winner of that session.
