HBO attacking torrents

DIY News writes "HBO is actively poisoning the BitTorrent downloads of the new show Rome. In addition to an older tactic of offering bogus downloads that never complete, HBO is now obstructing the downloads offered by other people. HBO runs peers that tell the tracker they have all the chunks of the show, but then send garbage data when a downloader requests a chunk. While the bogus peers can be detected, it will take much longer to download shows."

well aren't torrents inherently self regulating?

those which are corrupted won't be seeded? Plus sites can have comments to tell potential users about the validity...

or so I'm told

More or less. It's very obvious what groups are providing legit torrents, and the clients will block peers that seed phony data very quickly(so they won't significantly impact download times).

I pay for HBO but I find it a lot more convenient to just get the torrents of Rome. I hope that this doesn't become a problem. I'm not supporting pirating, but as far as I'm concerned if I'm paying for it my conscience is clear when I DL.

Rome is a good show. And come on now, they'll never stop us from downloading whatever we want. It's impossible.
