Hawken, holy gpu physx!

Just started playing Hawken, and apparently it got patched just a few days earlier to include a VERY intense Physx implimentation.

The effects themselves look incredible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYyc0Z5adgg

What is dissapointing however, is just how much it drops fps in the game.

I've got a gtx 650ti as a dedicated Physx card, and Hawken MAX's out my gpu usage on it ! It's not surprising to see >85% utilization ! Most other Physx titles barely get over 30%.

I thought I was pretty much covered with that card as a high end dedicated Physx card, maybe I was wrong !

What's all your experience with the new Hawken effects ?

The video looks like it adds crap to the screen just for the sake of it. Those particles which i asume are supposed to be fire look nothing like fire and the way the floor breaks up and then vanishes looks stupid.

If you need a whole second GPU just to run that stuff then its not worth it.

The effects are cool, you can sense the angst from the thread crappers.
I know it's a expensive game (F2P).

In concert, the seven PhysX enhancements bring the battlefield to life, adding a level of unscripted, dynamic action that is currently impossible to replicate through any other means. Hawken is a fantastic and engaging first-person shooter, and with debris and particles showering the scene the free-to-play game is taken to a new level where players become ever-more immersed in the action. That sounds like hyperbole, I know, but take PhysX-enhanced Hawken for a spin next month and you’ll hopefully agree.

Physx is so lame, the developers only need to implement it nothing else... Too lazy to create own complex effects that use less resources from GPU and CPU. Jesus...

I'm sorry, but the Physx implimentation in this game is totally awesome. Anyone with an Nvidia card should check it out, esp. cuz it's free.

^ @vampirr: For someone who less than a week ago had less than five posts, you certainly have gotten around to trolling the VC&G in record time...

While 650Ti as a dedicated Physx card should be pretty good for most, given that you've got a Titan as your main card, couldn't it be better just to let the monster handle both graphics and physx? In any case, I'd be curious to know how that would perform Vs the two card solution.

Any AMD user can grab a midrange Nvidia card and tag it along with their radeon and enjoy the goodness. I don't know why there is so much fuss, people need to just chill out, its a game.

I would try it both ways also as Plimogz suggests, just force the phyx on the Titan in control panel.

Yeah I could do that, but I bought the 650ti specifically so that the Titan could spread it's legs and not worry about Physx at all. I'll try it but I'm not expecting it to do better handling both.

Sometimes, the coding of the game/effects can effect the performance / utilization. Whether using 1 or 2 cards or even 2 cards close or far apart in cuda core, configuration. There is no set formula from all the setups and various games and user reports,l that I've noted.

Some of those things could be done in basic, scripted, terms without using PhysX.

The shield thing is very nice, but you could still have some effects there without needing PhysX, but instead they decided to have nothing.

It adds a level of detail that wouldn't otherwise be possible, but the total absence of any features in the non-PhysX setup is just because they haven't bothered adding even a scripted something, not because it's not possible to have anything at all.

Also, some of those effects actually look detrimental to gameplay. Anything which fills up a significant part of your screen in a multiplayer game is going to be bad when you're actually trying to chase or shoot people. In a competitive game, even without the performance hit, it's not something you would want, although I doubt Hawken is super competitive.

(And that fire definitely looks utterly retarded).

As a side note, is it reasonably easy and bug free to use an NV card for PhysX with AMD main GPU? I have a GTX650Ti kicking around not doing much at the moment.

Just tried Physx only on the Titan, it might be a bit better than having the 650ti run it, still lowers fps by about half at times.

Can this guy get banned already? All he does is troll, instigate, agitate, and come up with extremely uninformed / blatantly false posts.

So, both with Titan+650Ti and Titan alone, FPS occasionally drop by about half? I'm assuming that this is when there's a lot of particles flying around?

Is your target FPS really 144 Frames per second?

banned for having a differing opinions from yours.

Opinions cant be false either btw.

You would fit right in Nazi Germany. Maybe someone should look into your family tree.

Yep. It's going to be like lens flares when they first came out. Overused and shitty.

You know I never cared about PhysX but I just happened to buy an Nvidia card anyway. This does make it slightly more appealing.

Wow, I think the effects look pretty cool, and they fit well in this game. Nothing really too dramatic or over the top just to scream PhysX! at you. Looks like I'm gonna have to steal borrow my sons GTX680 for some fun with this game :sneaky:

I agree that particles immediately vanishing into thin air is kinda dumb, but the effects are well done nonetheless, based on the YouTube video. IMO 😉
