Hawaii launch and Nvidia prices

I'm looking to build my new PC in December, and I was curious if there was any historical trend that a new product launch by one company led to dropped prices by the other in the GPU market?

I plan on buying an Nvidia card regardless because I want to be able to stream games with the Shield, so I'm curious if we should expect to see lower prices on the GTX 770 and 780 shortly after Hawaii's announcement in October?

NV doesn't like to drop prices. Even after 7970GHz dropped and beat (slightly, then more with driver updates) the 680 it took the 760 to officially drop it. It remained overpriced for the majority of it's lifetime, only being a good deal at launch. They do tend to drop them when they update their own lineup, at least if they still continue both (680/70 has dropped finally).

If the AMD 9970 decimated the 780 then I would expect a response although it may be pretty weak.

If you look at the 770, it's going for $400+ while the 7970 is being cut to new lows (dunno the GHz) some are $300ish which means it's quite overpriced.

Hypothetically I expect that if the 9970 is out of the ballpark (I don't expect this) it will force NV to react and drop prices. As long as people ignore price/performance and just buy blindly, they will maintain high prices.

It all depends on how VI performs, if our estimates are correct it should perform better, so NV will most likely drop prices and introduce a new flagship GPU at their current price point. If AMD performs worse, Nvidia will do what they did last generation and neuter all of their mid range parts and sell them for double what theyre worth.

When HD7970GE beat 680 by 10-12%, 680 was still priced higher. Now 770 is trading blows with 7970GE but costs $100-150 more. NV has little pressure to lower prices because consumers keep paying more for their cards even if they are the same speed or slower. For NV to significantly drop prices on 780, HD9970 would need to beat it by 20%+, which would force NV to launch GTX785 and only then possibly drop 780 to $550.

OP the HD 9970 / 9950 is going to cause price cuts. if you are not in a hurry wait till Oct. since you are anyway going to buy Nvidia its all about lower prices which is bound to happen with competition. GTX 770 definitely is due for a price cut. HD 9950 with the Hawaii chip is going to be in a different perf league especially with OC. Don't be surprised if at stock speeds HD 9950 matches GTX 780 and HD 9970 matches Titan. That would mean newer/faster SKUs from Nvidia and price cuts on existing SKUs.

I have said repeatedly I think Hawaii's top end single GPU card will be about 3-5% faster on average than a gtx780, come in at $550, and Nvidia will counter with a price drop a few weeks afterwords then a gtx785 6-8 weeks after Hawaii's launch for $699. If first gen Maxwell GPU's really are coming in January / February on 28nm, then there probably wouldn't be a gtx785, or if there was it'd be a super limited run.

I think a big factor in Nvidia's pricing with 28nm cards is that they have utilized and relied quite a bit on first reviews, which have usually painted Nvidia's cards in a good light, whereas AMD did not get as much positive press with all their initial launches due to pricing relative to last gen cards. AMD's counters since Nvidia's releases have come mostly in stealthy price cuts which doesn't generate as much PR and also their (now aging) game bundles which were great at first but are questionable in significant value now.

If AMD delivers a card that beats gtx780 (or even Titan) and is $550, then Nvidia will have to counter in the face of all the positive PR AMD will be getting across the web.

They'll release a voltage unlocked "Titan FTW". People will be selling off their Titans, 780's, 680's, etc... to buy it.
