At 39 seconds it appear the tree made it, even though everything around it is gone.

This is really said, I really love Front street. I am glad I got to experience it again in June. I'm not sure if it has been drier than normal or not, but when I was there in June the highway back to Kihei closed twice due to fires.

Here is a video of my favorite restaurant in Hawaii burning down: https://apnews.com/article/hawaii-wildfire-maui-dora-winds-ec23c16abfbeb6ba689f1a98263720db

Dang, even the boats are on fire:

I had a pretty long day at work today & came home to veg out. They had "The Day After Tomorrow" on Hulu, so I watched that, then I saw the news about Hawaii...crazy! Over 270 structures destroyed so far. I've lived through California earthquakes & Florida hurricanes, but I can't imagine being trapped on an island with raging fires like this. I've kept up my emergency preparedness from my Boy Scout days...I do a monthly fire drill & have extinguishers & alarms, I have a bug-out plan with a 72-hour kit & fill up my cars at 1/4 tank, etc. But there's just nowhere to go on those islands...they said people were jumping into the water to escape the fire, just awful!

I did my weekly radio show until 6PM PDT today, hadn't heard about the files on Maui. Got home, prepared dinner and took it to the TV, where I'd DVRed the news. I'm OMG, some of the fires in the graphics they were showing of the island coincide with where my sister and her partner just bought a house in Kihei! On the news they said that cell phone coverage was down. I call her and she picks up, says they're alright, they, luckily, live upwind of the fires. Now that a lot of the fire has been extinguished there's more smoke, though. They are staying indoors. She said there was an incredible huge old banyan tree in Lahaina she just loved and it's now gone.

Yeah apparently 911 went down, cell phone towers went down, and a lot of people were asleep! They said people were literally jumping off cliffs into the water to escape the fires because they came so fast! I can't even imagine. Looks like they are getting some pretty fast help, but the fires still aren't contained. Dang.

The videos posted in this thread show that the Banyan tree is still standing. To me it looks like it still has foliage on it, but it is hard to tell.

I'm hearing that it's still standing, but probably won't survive the fire damage.

This is heartbreaking to us. We owned a couple of timeshares on Maui for many years and spent one or two weeks there every year. Lahaina was a wonderful, if quirky town.

Crazy. The only time I have ever heard Fire and Hawaii in the same sentence has been in association with lava flows. That usually affects a neighbourhood or some homes nearby, not a whole city.

That amazed me.

A coworker has family on the islands and as of yesterday morning he had not heard from any of them. He is Hawaiian and is obviously stressed about situation.my thoughts are with them. Just so sudden

I expect thise numbers to keep climbing as they are able to search butned out homes and areas. At one point last night, I was reading about bodies floating in the ocean along the seawall...plus the boats that burned and exploded...those could definitely add to the death toll.

They've started a google sheet with names of people who have been found or still missing:

The destruction of central Lahaina looks fairly complete though some chunks were spared on the north side.
Looks like the Cannery Mall is intact and the structure might have shielded the Old Lahaina Luau and Star Noodle but hard to be certain.

We're due to go to the island in September but decided to only stay in Kihei this time as opposed to our usual west/east side split.

My heart is with those who are suffering as a result of this tragic disaster. I have a conference to attend in about a month on Maui that may be cancelled, but if it did, it would be insignificant relative to what has happened...
